Clinical Pastoral Program

Minister where you’re needed most.

The provision of clinical spiritual care has been an integral part of the philosophy and services of ECU Health for over 40 years. We are proud that our Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program has been instrumental in training clergy, laypersons and chaplains to serve in various caregiving and educational roles. CPE is a postgraduate allied health and interfaith professional education program. It brings laypersons and ministers of all faiths (pastors, priests, rabbis, imams and others) into supervised encounters with people in crisis, trauma and end of life. CPE students are entrusted with the unique opportunity to develop practice and interpersonal skills for spiritual care and education. Are you ready to grow? Let's get started.

Program Overview

Your Training

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is interfaith professional education for ministry. Persons in CPE engage humans in crisis and learn from that interaction under the supervision of an ACPE Certified Educator. In CPE, students work in group settings to receive and offer feedback on their pastoral ministry. CPE makes best use of the disciplines of theology, behavioral sciences and adult education. While CPE learning happens in a group context, it is also a dynamic, individualized style of learning that seeks to enhance students’ pastoral identity through the areas of pastoral formation, pastoral competence and pastoral reflection. Students in CPE are entrusted with the unique opportunity of bringing their cultural and theological heritage along as part of the learning process.

CPE students collaborate in the care of patients and families with the health care team, comprised of dedicated professionals and students from various disciplines. CPE students also have opportunities to learn with and from clinical staff chaplains who have a deep passion for pastoral care and theological education.
