Position Summary

As a Health Care Interpreter (Spanish), you will provide oral interpretation between speakers with limited English proficiency (LEP) and the healthcare team. Communication includes conveying meaning accurately between and among patients with LEP or other communication barriers, their families, and team members. Limited written translation is also required.

  • Must communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with supervisors, co-workers, and all other team members. Communication takes place by computer, telephone, email, fax, pager, and/or in-person.
  • Must have knowledge of computer systems, including hardware and software.
  • Must become knowledgeable about Vidant Health resources and other relevant sources of information.
  • Must follow ethical principles, including accepted interpreter codes of ethics and standards of practice. Must act as a clarifier and a culture broker, as appropriate.
  • Must be willing to assist with other departmental needs as needed. Position requires travel.
  • Must consistently extend hospitality, warmth, compassion, and respect to all patients, families, and team members. The Interpreter will treat everyone with dignity, patience, tolerance, friendliness, and courtesy. 


Minimum Requirements

  • Associate Degree or higher
  • Up two years related experience
  • Demonstrated language proficiency in speaking and listening in primary and secondary languages.  Proficiency must be equivalent to Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) skill level 3+ or higher
  • Bilingual professional experience that required daily interaction in primary and secondary languages
  • Degrees of equivalent level attained outside of the U.S. can be used to meet the educational requirement

Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Two or more years of satisfactory supervised work experience as a healthcare interpreter in an acute care hospital or public health care setting
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Education and/or work experience in candidate's non-native country

Other Information

  • Part-Time (20 hours a week)
  • Flexible Days (Monday - Friday)
  • Must be able to assist on 2nd Shift and Weekends (if needed)
