Position Summary

Professional Development Specialist inspires professional nurses through human connections, innovation and experiential learning, utilizing evidence-based practice with the goal of advancing the mission of Vidant Health.


Facilitator of Learning:

  • Serve as Nurse Planner for continuing nursing education
  • Develop and evaluate core curricula
  • Assess learning needs
  • Lead experiential learning activities through innovative teaching and learning methods.

Leader and Mentor:

  • Validates clinical performance
  • Develop, implement and evaluate teaching and learning experiences to continuously improve quality, experience, and finance outcomes
  • Establish effective communication networks with unit and organization leadership

Scientific Inquiry:

  • Creates a supportive environment for nursing research/EBP/QI and integrating into practice
  • Disseminate research findings through educational programs and other activities (internal and external)

Change Management:

  • Fosters acceptance, adoption and action toward change

Role Development:

  • Facilitate orientation processes, nurse residency program, and role transitions
  • Administer and evaluate learning assessments tools
  • Provides life support training and annual requirements
  • Lead unit-based development and training.

Collaborative Partnerships:

  • Collaborates with interprofessional teams, leaders, stakeholders and others to facilitate nursing practice and positive outcomes (Across Vidant Health, Eastern AHEC, Community Partners, Schools and Colleges of Nursing)
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of collaborative endeavors to continuously improve quality, experience, and finance outcomes.

Minimum Requirements

  • MSN in Nursing Education or MSN with Postmasters Certificate in Education is required
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the state of North Carolina
  • Professional Development Specialist-Nursing will be required to obtain Nursing Professional Development Certification within 3 years
  • 3 years to 5 years in clinical practice with evidence of clinical knowledge, leadership, and teaching


Preferred Requirements

Preferred experience in the following specialties:

  • Criticial Care
  • Surgery
