Position Summary

A high school graduate that works under supervision of the Laboratory Manager or Designee, cleans laboratory equipment, gowns as needed, restocks departments, put up supplies, assists in clerical duties, and is primarily responsible for phlebotomy duties including: blood cultures, blood samples, and blood gases.

Reviewed handwashing policy and practices handwashing techniques
Reviewed Book I and Book II policies for general laboratory
Has read and understands safety policies
Know locations for shower and all eyewash stations
Know how to use fire extinguisher and has practiced use of fire extinguisher
Know how to use MSDS sheets and location in lab and intranet
Has been checked for color blindness
Attends employee forums
Read and understand corporate policies
Knows how to report a fire and where to send paperwork
Completes work assignments and helps other members of laboratory staff
Helps supervisors with tasks
Communicates well with patients and co-workers
Does not leave work undone/by referring to it is someone elses responsibility
Does not sacrifice quality of work on the completion of procedures
Regularly schedules work in order that certain procedures not requiring complete attention may be performed while other duties may be simultaneously completed
Assists in the orientation and instructions of student and new staff members
Follows proper procedures and policies for all aspects of the job
Attempts to understand patients needs and responds accordingly
Refers problems unable to personally solve to the Laboratory Manager/Supervisor
Demonstrates an ability to access the situation, consider the alternatives and choose the appropriate course of action
Uses procedures manuals to solve problems without always calling supervisor
Does not abuse sick time
Does not take advantage of fellow employees by calling in all the time
Does not abuse vacation time by taking more than 2 weekends off per month
Provides proper notification for absence or tardiness (2hr ahead of time)
Returns from break and lunch promptly
When necessary willing to adjust schedule to help laboratory
Always wears hospital identification
Follows hospital dress code
Attends to personal and health affairs so they do not conflict with schedule
Had reviewed holiday schedule
Reviews work schedule daily to prevent tardiness
Uses time wisely
Do not abuse phone and cell phone during work hours
Does not abuse internet
Takes no more than 2 breaks within 8 hours of work
Knows how to get new password/one pass
Able to access EHR.

Has reviewed proper PPE and knows where PPE is located
Has read collection manual and signed off on manual
Knows order of draw for phlebotomy/observed
Uses proper patient identifiers/observed
Can receive specimens in Sunquest/observed
Properly labels tubes with correct information
Knows how to look up proper tubes for tests
Reviews signs in room before collecting specimen
Knows how to change labels in label printer/observed

Minimum Requirements

A. High school diploma or equivalent

Physical Demands
A. Must be substance abuse free.
B. Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
C. Must have vision adequate for writing, typing, viewing computer screen and to distinguish colors.
D. Must be able to hear and understand conversations in a moderate tone, including telephone communication.
E. Must be able walk, bend and lift up to fifty pounds.
F. Must be able to drive a care and have a valid NC drivers license or transportation to and from work to be on time.
G. Must be able to work in an environment with unpleasant or chemical odors without adverse reaction.
H. Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English.

B. Must have the ability to understand the meaning of words, associate and use them effectively.
C. Must have ability to perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately

A. Will require at least 8 hour shifts and 72-80 hours per pay period as standard.
