Position Summary

The Clinical Informaticist is responsible for understanding clinical requirements in a healthcare setting and translating those requirements into formal specifications for clinical technology products and services. This includes leveraging and optimizing clinical systems to support standardized workflows and processes. The Clinical Informaticist also is responsible for supporting and training end users on clinical systems functionality and workflows, ensuring optimal use of clinical technology to achieve system wide strategic priorities. The Clinical Informaticist utilizes process improvement and change management skills to promote improved quality and process efficiencies through technology. The Clinical Informaticist also works closely with Information Services, Vidant operations leadership, and Quality to achieve key responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Conducts detailed workflow analyses to examine current practices and workflows, and analyzes the impact of informatics solutions on workflows processes. Conducts gap analyses and designs future state workflows based on industry leading practices.

Prioritizes data collection activities based on immediate or anticipated needs of the defined problem.

Defines and documents detailed specifications and standardized workflows to solve clinical problems based on organizational standards and requirements.

Documents complex workflow analyses into detailed processes and sub processes using required applications (e.g. Visio) and per the Health Informatics departmental style guide.

Defines the problem to be solved based on the collection of detailed assessment data and workflow analyses.

Validates the problem to be solved and proposed solutions with key stakeholders.

Works with key stakeholders and members of the Health Informatics team to identify and define measureable metrics for monitoring expected improvements and outcomes for defined solutions.

Modifies workflows and technology solutions based on outcomes monitoring including collection of assessment data.

Acts as bridge between clinical system end users, Information Services, Quality, and other key stakeholders by translating clinical requirements into technology solutions.

Monitors standardized workflows and informs Health Informatics team of practice variations. Troubleshoots practice variations and modifies standardized enterprise workflows to support expected local variances.

Delivers at the elbow training and support to clinical end users on system functionality and associated workflows that support clinical practice. Uses standardized training materials.

Troubleshoots end user issues with system use and adoption and reports this information to the service desk in a timely manner. Identifies patterns and develops system solutions to issues.

Actively closes communication with end users on identified issues in a timely manner.

Actively participates in clinical applications testing. Develops and/or advises on testing scripts based on clinical scenarios and requirements. Identifies bugs and workflow impact issues that require resolution.

Designs data flows and reports ensuring data capture and data integrity to ensure data capture at the point of care.

Demonstrates an understanding of analytics and designs data capture and data flows to support VH analytic initiatives.

Is an active member of the implementation team as new technology is deployed in the clinical setting and performs assigned duties as a member of the project team.

Actively participates as a member of the post implementation assessment team, and identifies and troubleshoots workflow and technology issues that are impeding clinical system adoption.

Actively rounds in clinical areas observing clinical users using the EHR, Analyzes observations and makes detailed recommendations to improve efficiencies and desired outcomes.

Is an active member of assigned committees and workgroups serving as an informatics expert resource to assist in achieving committee/workgroup objectives.

Participates in governance councils as requested, and completes and documents the required analyses necessary for advisory councils to make informed fact based decisions.

Develops Health Informatics communication and training materials in collaboration with EHR educators, including tip sheets and bulletins. Advises on EHR curriculum development, as requested by EHR educators.

Designs and delivers change management activities to support clinical transformation and system adoption (e.g. roadshows, sneak previews, validation testing).

Applies knowledge of current regulatory requirements and ethical standards to informatics solutions.

Participates in the development of organizational policies and procedures as an expert informatics resource to ensure the impact of clinical technology is considered in policy and procedure development.

Actively participates in vendor user groups and industry forums.

Travels to various Vidant Health sites and facilities to provide informatics services and support as assigned.

Participates in rotating 24x7 on call support as assigned.

Demonstrates flexibility by supporting go live implementations for 24x7 support as assigned.
Independently manages individual work efforts and assists with work efforts of others.

Demonstrates self-direction to manage single-person projects ((enhancement requests)) from inception through completion including developing, executing and monitoring work plan.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelors degree in clinical discipline required; Masters Degree in Informatics in lieu of clinical degree
2+years demonstrated clinical informatics or clinical IS experience
Informatics certification preferred (ANCC, CPHIMS, CAHIMS or similar informatics certification)
Obtains and/or maintains current proficiency from the vendor and continued education/learning to understand the functionality of the electronic health record.
Six Sigma LEAN training preferred
3 years experience using an EHR in a clinical setting preferred
Operational knowledge of healthcare including a demonstrated understanding of workflow processes in a clinical setting required
Demonstrated proficiency of the Microsoft Office suite
Ability to communicate clinical concepts to technical teams and system design concepts to clinical end users
Ability to work in a dynamically changing environment with competing priorities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
