Vidant Medical Center is a 900+ bed Level-1 Trauma Center, regional referral hospital and is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health. We serve as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Vidant Medical Center provides acute, intermediate, rehabilitation and outpatient services to more than 1.4 million people in 29 counties. Responsibilities

Key responsibilities 1 -4 constitutes presence where the leader connects to the activities of the front line for their area of responsibility. This requires a minimum of 50% of the Nurse Manager's time.

1. Produce excellent patient outcomes.

Participates in daily unit safety huddle and assures that a safety huddle is conducted at each change of shift.

Develops and implements an effective ongoing program to measure, assess and improve quality of care and patient safety. Trends quality and patient safety outcomes and process measures. Leads improvement efforts based on data.

Reviews and follows up on safety intelligence data.

Coaches and develops unit based teams to achieve top quartile performance amongst peer comparisons.

Builds staff accountability for nursing practice expectations including bundle compliance, return to care practices (Bedside Shift Report, Hourly rounding and use of the communication Boards) and adoption of best practice and evidence based protocols. Assures that we deliver care according to the VMC standard.

Identifies variances in expected performance and implements plans to address variances.

Ensures formulation and implementation of unit based interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams.

Supports innovation and research to improve patient care.
2. Develop a strong and engaged workforce.

Is approachable and provides staff with an environment that supports their respective professional practice, health and well-being.
Accountable for the selection of unit personnel using the peer interview process.

Assures appropriate orientation for new staff, and provides individual feedback on staff development and progress.

Implements an effective peer review process for assessment of all unit personnel.

Is fair and consistent in management decision making.

Creates non-punitive culture that supports patient safety.

Encourages, mentors and coaches staff in advancing innovation using research and evidence.

Advances professional practice of direct staff through specialty certification and participation in programs and advanced education.

Addresses staff concerns in timely manner. Resolves staff conflict and holds staff accountable for practicing in a safe environment.

Console and coach staff using just culture processes.

Rounds on patients and families daily.
3. Produce excellent patient and family engagement.

Collaborates with Office of Patient Family Experience to engage Patient Family Advisors in improvement work and on unit based councils.

Reviews HCAHPS performance and leads improvement efforts to maintain top decile performance in HealthStream database.

Routinely evaluates the quality and appropriateness of unit care delivery by rounding with staff on patients and families and observing teams in action.
4. Achieve Clinical Efficiency.

Removes barriers that cause inefficient patient flow and throughput in partnership with medical director and case management.

Identifies opportunities for improved efficiency and waste reduction and leads efforts to reduce variation and eliminate waste.

Initiates, monitors and/or participates in clinical care delivery evaluation and performance improvement initiatives.

Uses performance improvement tools to lead process improvement activities within unit.
5. Leadership - Responsibilities account for 20% of the Nurse Manager's time.

Partnering with unit medical director to develop annual unit goals.

Partnering with unit medical director to lead implementation of action plans to achieve unit goals.

Conducting staff performance evaluations.

Using legal and organizational requirements in decisions related to personnel management.

Maintaining accurate and current personnel records.
6. Unit Staffing - Responsibilities account for 10% of the Nurse Manager's time.

Responsible for creating and maintaining the unit staff schedule.

Being accountable for using workload data to justify and adjust staffing needs.
7. Finance- Responsibilities account for 10% of the Nurse Manager's time.

Leading unit activities that support the institutional financial plan, including performance improvement and Lean initiatives.

Partnering with Administrator in development of budget to ensure appropriate resources to meet patient demand.

Contributing to financial variance analysis and collaborating with Administrator and staff to identify and remove waste.

Stretch assignments including special projects
8. Professional Development - Responsibilities account for 10% of the Nurse Manager's time.

Developing a personal professional development plan and assuming responsibility for personal clinical competence and continuing education including maintenance of professional credentials.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's Degree or higher
Licensure/Registration/Certification: License as a Registered Nurse, must maintain licensure with the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
Three to four years related experience
