Information Services at Vidant Health

Vidant Health offers comprehensive Information Technology (IT) services and infrastructure to support and enable all aspects of organizational operations. Our IT division consists of a state-of-the-art data center located in Greenville, NC. The data center services all information technology needs of Vidant Health facilities. All Vidant Health owned or leased hospitals are on a common IT platform, including our electronic health record (EHR) that uses Epic's suite of applications. Vidant Health has achieved Meaningful Use Stage 2 recognition and is also approaching Stage 7 for HIMSS Analytics’ Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM) recognition.

Position Summary

The Cogito Tools Administrator is responsible for the Cogito reporting and analytics tools suite, including Reporting Workbench, Radar dashboards and Slicer Dicer. The Administrator develops, implements, and maintains the policies and procedures that guide the use of Cogito tools and security standards for these tools following industry best practice and Vidant enterprise-wide security policies.

The Administrator will oversee the use of Epic Cogito products and ensure their appropriate and effective utilization. They will stay current with Cogito product enhancements and strategies with responsibility for implementation of new features and development of plans to transition Vidant to new solutions and/or changes in the use of existing solutions. The Administrator will work with diverse, multi-disciplinary teams, including end users to understand business requirements to translate details into functional and technical requests and to provide guidance and advice about the right tool to meet their requirements.

The Cogito Tools Administrator will serve as the lead to plan and execute projects of medium complexity including system upgrades and rollout of Slicer Dicer and executive dashboards. In collaboration with Application and Informatics teams, the Administrator will monitor adoption and utilization of Cogito tools and develop plans to either retire, replace or enhance data products to meet changing business requirements.

The Administrator is a systematic thinker that understands modern software architecture and its dependencies, and how to configure or modify systems to achieve desired outcomes.


  • Establish policies and procedures guiding build and testing standards for Epic Cogito reporting and analytic tools

  • Implement mechanisms to monitor and maintain tools to ensure reporting compliance

  • Builder, or final approver, for all changes to Reporting Workbench templates

  • Determine whether new report build and/or modifications are needed based on organizational business requirements and Epic enhancements

  • Manage the relationship between the Enterprise Data and Analytics and Epic application teams related to Cogito tools

  • Oversee communication and documentation related to expectations, changes, and upgrades with Epic Cogito tools whether changes are initiated internally or by Epic or related third party products

  • Owns and maintains security, access, and distribution of policies and procedures for Epic Cogito tools.  Collaborates with IAM Manager to ensure decisions are reflected in user access templates and audited to ensure compliance

  • Monitor Epic system reporting performance and takes actions to optimize in collaboration with IS infrastructure and application team members

  • Ensure that all Epic reports are reflected in the Enterprise Data Catalog and the Data Catalog is utilized by requestors and report writers to leverage existing data products before creating new ones

  • Create and maintain Slicer Dicer data models in collaboration with application team and end users.   Define, document and ensure utilization of technical and data validation processes.  Collaborate with other Enterprise Data and Analytics team members to develop Slicer Dicer end user training materials and assist with applying the tools for data analytics

  • Provide advice and guidance to Application and Informatics teams as well as end users on the right reporting/BI tools to utilize for the right purpose

  • Keep abreast of Epic Cogito product development.  Incorporate product strategy changes into Vidant Analytic roadmap and ensure that new features are rolled out with routine upgrades

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, or equivalent related field
  • Successful completion of Epic certifications/proficiencies is required.  Cogito PM Proficiency, RW Administration. Certification, Radar Proficiency, and at least one Clarity certification
  • 2-3 years healthcare experience
  • Strong understanding of Cogito Reporting tools
  • PL/SQL Developer and technical understanding of Microsoft and Linux operating systems
  • Clear and effective communicator
  • Decisive and well-organized
  • Past success working independently as well as actively participating in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Experience leveraging, and contributing to, standards and guidelines and comfortable supporting the standards when challenged by others.  Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor team members in the use of standards
  • Passion for proactively learning, exploring, and sharing your knowledge and discoveries
  • Demonstrated project management skills using agile methodology including ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and follow through on completion of high-profile projects
  • Able to balance innovation with adherence to standards and guidelines including data privacy and security
