Vidant North Hospital is a Joint Commission-accredited, 204-bed acute bed facility where residents of Halifax, Northampton and Warren counties in North Carolina and Mecklenburg, Brunswick and Greensville in Virginia receive a wide range of health services close to home. Vidant North Hospital’s team of more than 60 providers and 850 employees represent most medical specialties. In addition to 24-hour emergency care, we also offer intensive care, medical, surgical, orthopedic, behavioral health, rehabilitation and therapy services; a cardiac catheterization lab; and outpatient clinics. Position Summary

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Peer Support Specialist will provide peer support services to persons with mental illness and/or substance abuse problems. The Peer Support Specialist will assist clients with developing self-help, crisis/coping and social skills. Support will also be provided to clients to assist them with finding resources for housing, employment and/or education, while helping to develop a secure network of community support.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School or equivalent is required unless substitution as outlined below is met.
  • Training or degree in addictions, counseling, social work, nursing, or similar a plus.
  • North Carolina Peer Support Specialist certification is required.
  • Past or present consumer of mental health or substance use services with a history of managing one¿s own illness. Candidate must have a minimum of two years in recovery without crises/relapse that resulted in inpatient/residential treatment or any criminal charges. Must have completed WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) or equivalent training. Must be computer literate in basic software such as MicroSoft Word, Excel, and similar.
  • If no High School diploma, meeting other requirements would be considered. Would consider less than 2 years without a crisis as decribed above if candidate has strong experience in the field as a Peer Support Specialist or other paid or volunteer role in behavioral health for at least one year (12 months contiguous).
  • Less than 1 year with knowledge of the recovery process.
  • Ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized mental health processes
  • Knowledge and skill to teach and engage in basic problem solving strategies to support clients in self-directed recovery
  • Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of mental illness or substance abuse
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Familiarity with local community resources
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work in collaboration with treatment staff
