Position Summary

Primary duties will be related to community COVID initiatives both within and external of the organization. Responsible for creating the first impression of the organization's services to patients and families and other external customers.

Work in a COVID related role within the Vidant Health System, in varying settings that may include regional medical clinic settings, office environments, mobile testing sites, laboratory settings, and/or hospital settings.  Support Vidant's mission to meet the needs of region wide communities in response to the COVID pandemic, related resources, testing initiatives, treatment options, and vaccination initiatives.

The main duties of this position will involve patient specimen processing and PCR testing in the clinical molecular microbiology laboratory. The technician/scientist will be responsible for maintaining a sterile environment, monitoring test accuracy and validity, and reporting results in a timely manner. Other duties may be performed as assigned.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

Prepare and Perform Test

  • Perform Molecular Microbiology laboratory tests
  • Monitor test results and QC results to ensure accuracy and validity of testing
  • Prepare patient specimens as required for laboratory testing
  • Maintain appropriate records for patient testing and QC results

Specimen Identification

  • Accurate pipetting of using a variety of pipettor configurations
  • Ensure proper specimen identification

Communicate

  • Clearly communicate with other lab personnel, supervisors, physicians, and nursing staff
  • Work well as a team with other laboratory staff and management

Cleaning and Disinfecting

  • Cleaning and disinfecting following laboratory protocols to prevent contamination of work surfaces and equipment with amplified material.

Multitask Workload

  • Ability to multitask workload to meet demands of result turnaround times while completing other assigned duties

Proficiency

  • Proficient operation of instrumentation
  • Proficient usage of Laboratory Information System, Hospital Information System, and other computer software as necessary
  • PCR testing
  • Pipetting

Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent (or greater) is preferred.

Additional requirements listed below as needed:
Medical Lab Technician/Technologist - Related college degree

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities required:
Ability to work in varying environmental conditions and weather variations
Work independently with minimal direct supervision
Run or move quickly during the course of a shift
Stand at a post for an extended period of time without sitting
Read and comprehend signage text, computer screens, and mobile device screens
Operate a Thermal/Handheld scanner
Provide private screening communications in accordance to HIPAA guidelines NC driver's license if required for position job responsibilities

Other Information

  • HOURS: must be willing to work all shifts (1st, 2nd, 3rd) as this position rotates shift includes holiday and weekend rotation

  • Full time with benefits (2 full time/1 part time & 1 As Needed)
