Vidant Medical Center is a 900+ bed Level-1 Trauma Center, regional referral hospital and is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health. We serve as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Vidant Medical Center provides acute, intermediate, rehabilitation and outpatient services to more than 1.4 million people in 29 counties. The Medical ICU is a closed 24 bed unit that provides support for the critically ill medical and/or pulmonary patient. MICU serves as the pulmonary critical care team and critical care consult team; critical care intensivists manage care and are in-house 24/7. The patient population within the MICU will include, but are not limited to these diagnoses/conditions:  

  • Respiratory failure requiring intubation, advanced airway management,  acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock 
  • Post cardiac arrest care, targeted temperature management, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension 
  • Esophageal varices requiring Blakemore tube placement, GI bleed, infectious disease management 
  • Multisystem organ failure, acute & chronic renal failure, continuous renal replacement therapy 
  • Organ donor patients including brain death donation and donation after cardiac death 

Staffing/Scheduling 

  • RN ratio 1:2 & 1:1 per unit guidelines

Position Summary

Responsible to provide care in accordance with the North Carolina Board of Nursing-Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Standards of Practice and other standards established by profession/professional groups, regulating bodies/agents. Nursing care will be delivered in accordance with Vidant Health and entity specific nursing policies, procedures and professional standards of care/practice.

Responsible for the provision and coordination of nursing care to include the collection and analysis of assessment data, identification of expected outcomes and development of plan of care in collaboration with the patient/family and other interdisciplinary team members. Identifies interventions to attain expected outcomes, implements the interventions identified in the plan of care, evaluates the progress of the patient/family toward attainment of outcomes, and documents the process. This care includes sensitivity to age specific and unique needs of the patient/family.

Promotes and evaluates the effective functioning of the health care team. Collaborates with health care team members to meet the identified needs of the patient/family throughout the episode of care. Delegates tasks and activities as appropriate and governed by NC Nurse Practice Act.

Minimum Requirements

  • Nursing Diploma, Associate Degree in Nursing, or Bachelors Degree in Nursing is required.
  • Current NC RN license or licensure to practice in a participating Nurse Licensure Compact state Health Care Provider is required.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support is required.
