A Changed Life Changing Lives
As a staff nurse in the Children’s Emergency Department, Steve Smith has to be at his best on patients’ worst days. Smith knows firsthand the value of dedicated nurses who work tirelessly to care for children, as a birth defect put him in the hospital as a child. Smith is a Vidant Health employee whose life was changed by great nurses; now he wants to do the same for his patients.
PUTTING SMILES ON PATIENTS’ FACES
Suffering from Spina Bifida as a child, the care and compassion that the nurses showed Smith made a lasting impact. That lifelong memory inspired him to enter nursing, to provide the same expert care to other children. Life in the Children’s ED can be tough. Outcomes aren’t always positive, and that can take a toll on the staff who invest so much into children’s care. But putting a smile on a child’s face puts a smile on Smith’s face, too. They’re his favorite part of his job, and a joy to work with.
“VIDANT’S MISSION ISN’T JUST WORDS ON A WALL.”
Many organizations talk about their mission a lot, but Smith says Vidant truly applies it to the culture. “I like the word ‘journey.’ It applies to a journey as a professional, but also, you’re helping patients on a journey.” And Steve Smith’s own personal journey helps him continue to embody Vidant’s mission by serving each of his patients through whatever life throws their way.
“At Vidant, you will learn a lot, personally and professionally, that will go with you the rest of your life.”
