VIDANT MEDICAL GROUP - Sri Jasthy, MD
“It’s just like being part of a small community of its own, once you get to know the patients and their families.”
Where science and service meet
Growing up in India, Dr. Sri Jasthy was fascinated by science. As she got older, the intersection of science and service drew her to the medical field. Attending medical school partially in India and partially in the United States, Jasthy launched a career dedicated to leveraging her scientific knowledge to serve her patients.
Strength in tough times
During her residency in Pittsburgh, Jasthy did a rotation in the field of hematology and oncology. She was struck by the wide scope of the field. Seeing many different pathologies—and seeing the intense focus on research that is part of oncology—drew her to make it her specialty. Walking with patients and their families through the incredibly complex process of cancer, answering their questions, and being able to interact one-on-one is her favorite part of the job. She is always amazed by the strength that her patients display when confronted with such a difficult, life-altering diagnosis. That strength drives her to be a better physician.
“The opportunity at Vidant was very unique.”
Dr. Jasthy chose specifically to serve in rural eastern North Carolina, when Vidant Health opened a new oncology practice in the area. Her unique position with Vidant Medical Group provides opportunities for her to serve VMG clinics and Vidant Duplin and Vidant Edgecombe hospitals. Before the practice existed, patients were traveling long distances—often missing work and incurring heavy expenses—to receive care at other facilities. While making life a bit easier for patients means she’s now the one with the long drive, her 90-minute commute isn’t one that bothers her. “When I saw this opportunity, I saw that it was going to be a very good community practice,” she says, “where we are able to provide services where they are needed the most.”
