nurse extern program overview 

As a nurse extern, nursing students have an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a hands-on clinical setting at a Magnet designated academic medical center.  Nurse externs will benefit from the knowledge and guidance of experienced registered nurses through immersion into the professional practice of nursing at Vidant Medical Center.

To be eligible, candidates must:

  • Be enrolled in an accredited Bachelor of Science Nursing program
  • Successfully completed the junior year
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
    • Certification as a Nurse Aide II prior to the start of the Nurse Extern Program

Program Details

The program is a 7-week paid summer position, including one week of hospital-based orientation followed by unit-based orientation and preceptorship with a seasoned RN preceptor. A variety of unit specialties are available. Nurse externs will have an opportunity for alternate learning experiences on other units or specialties as applicable, and must commit to attend all sessions of the program.
 

Application Process

Applications will be accepted Dec. 1 through Feb. 1.  Interviews will be offered to select candidates during February.  All candidates will be notified of their status by March 1.

  • Complete application
  • Current unofficial transcript
  • Updated resume
  • Three letters of recommendation (personal, professional, and clinical faculty)
