About The East Carolina Heart Institute

The East Carolina Heart Institute is the first in North Carolina devoted exclusively to education, research, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The institute is associated with Vidant Medical Center and East Carolina University. The primary facilities that make up the Heart Institute are located on the campuses of Vidant Medical Center and ECU’s Brody School of Medicine. We use the most advanced equipment and techniques to manage both familiar and rare cardiovascular problems. Our integration of basic science and clinical research, along with the clinical practice of medicine and surgery, ensures that patients receive the latest, most promising treatment options based on thorough review of their individual needs.

  • Scope: Vidant Health is a healthcare system of hospitals and clinics in eastern NC. Vidant Medical Center (VMC) is a 974-bed academic medical center that serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.  VMC is a regional referral center and the flagship hospital for Vidant Health.  VMC has over 700 practicing physicians on its medical staff.  VMC serves 29 counties in eastern North Carolina with a population of 1.4 million people.  On an annual basis, it serves 45,000 inpatients and over 170,000 outpatients (including 117,000 ED visits), in addition to a surgical volume of 21,000.  Total operating revenue for VMC - 1.1 Billion In its role as an academic medical center, VMC currently trains 2,500 students in a variety of fields including nursing and allied health.  Through its relationship with the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, VMC employs and trains over 300 residents in 14 programs as well as 80 fellows in 20 programs.

  • The management of the clinical services of the system is accomplished through "system service lines" which are multidisciplinary coordinating teams across the continuum of disease care and management.  For many of those services, VMC serves as the core for provision of specialized and tertiary care.  VMC is divided into clinical services typically organized in large academic medical centers.  These include children' hospital, level one trauma center, women' center, transplant center, behavioral health center, neurosciences center, cardiovascular center, and cancer center.  Matrix reporting relationship to the Chief Network Development Officer.

  • The cardiovascular center at VMC is a bed tower comprised of all CV services including cath, ep, cardiovascular surgery, and has 146 inpatient beds, 42 outpatient beds and covers 321,005 square feet.

Position Summary

  • Translate strategies into actionable initiatives that enable achievement of results that align with established goals to create and sustain operational excellence for cardiovascular services at Vidant Medical Center.

  • Leads the integration and provides ultimate oversight for multiyear strategies to advance these services. Works in partnership with management and physician leaders in ensuring that plans, operations and patient care are aligned with the Mission, Vision and Values.

  • Ensures broader organizational support around identified goals, strategies, budgets, and metrics associated with the performance of assigned services.  Ensures that policies, procedures and practices are operationalized to support safe, reliable care and fosters a continuous learning culture.

  • Builds the organizational structure, talent, and other capabilities to implement and operate the assigned services. Responsible for establishing, measuring, and achieving performance metrics, consistent with Vidant Health expectations.

  • Employs methods of change management to advance the organization by using tools, business processes, budget allocations and operational practices to significantly reshape Vidant Health.

  • Accountable for a positive organizational culture in conducting business, decision making and performance management to influence work attitudes and enhance job satisfaction. Provides leadership and has oversight of patient safety, quality improvement, best practice, infection prevention, and regulatory compliance. Stays current on quality and performance measures from emerging national and state requirements.

  • Member of system management teams and functions as a key liaison between the leadership teams and physician partners and applicable governing board of the health care entities and programs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's Degree is required.

  • 8 - 10 years of experience is required.
