About Palliative Care

The Palliative Care Unit provides care for patients who have potentially life-limiting conditions. Palliative Care at VMC is provided on an acute care unit where non-cardiac monitored patients receive nursing and medical care with a focus on symptom-control, and families, along with the patient receive psychosocial and educational support in a soothing environment. Palliative Care is not the same as Hospice Care although the care can be similar in some ways - palliative treatment encompasses a broader spectrum of care and is not just focused on end-of-life. Palliative care neither hastens death nor prolongs life. The nurses, care partners and social workers in Palliative Care are specially trained to deal with the complex medical and psychosocial issues associated with chronic illness.
