About Vidant Medical Center

Vidant Medical Center is a fully accredited, 900+ bed regional referral facility encompassing a Level-1 Trauma Center and extensive inpatient and outpatient services including intensive and intermediate care, pediatrics, bariatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pain management and psychiatry.


  • Supervisory/Management: Develops annual goals for the PBM program with the PBM Steering Committee in conjunction with the organization's quality plan. Maintains effective communication and coordination with all disciplines that interface with PBM and transfusion activities.
  • Technical/Clinical: Reviews, recommends, and/or introduces PBM and transfusion-related technologies to the PBM Committees and appropriate hospital personnel. Consults with clinical services regarding PBM program changes that will affect blood product use, blood transfusion equipment needs, etc. Acts as a resource in solving transfusion-related technical problems. Identifies and investigates any trends related to transfusion practices.
  • Utilization Management: Monitors transfusion medicine product utilization and brings utilization issues to the attention of the medical director of the transfusion service, and PBM Committees Chairs. Conducts prospective and retrospective audits on the utilization of blood products and their alternatives and identifies and investigates any trends related to transfusion practices.
  • Quality/Risk Activities: Reviews and investigates incident reports and management of transfusion reactions; where appropriate, recommends changes to current practices. Monitors blood product waste and maintains process improvement initiatives to identify high-yield opportunities and minimize blood product waste. Promotes benchmarking and evidence-based practice in the transfusion of the appropriate blood products and their alternatives. Works collaboratively with the manager, technical specialist, and blood transfusion staff to ensure updating of policy and procedure manuals to reflect changes in transfusion practice.
  • Specialized skills and knowledge required: Solid computer skills and knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software applications. Knowledge of compliance and regulatory processes specific to transfusion medicine. Knowledge of quality improvement processes.

Minimum Requirements

  • RN or MT degree with 3 years experience transfusing blood products.
  • Specialist of Blood Banking preferred.
