The Outer Banks Hospital, located in Nags Head, North Carolina, is a full service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The hospital opened in March 2002 and is one of the newest hospitals in eastern North Carolina. The hospital's 21 private rooms are designed to meet the needs of our coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 250,000 in the summer season. The labor and delivery area consists of two labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum rooms, a five-bed nursery, a dedicated caesarean-section operating room and a triage room.


  • Adapts procedures to meet individual needs of neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment for each surgical procedure. Is accountable for and participates in sponge, needle and instrument counts on all cases as appropriate and according to standard policy and procedures. Follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to Circulating RN and surgeon and/or corrects immediately. Checks all equipment/instruments needed, prior to each procedure to insure proper functioning.
  • Demonstrates the ability to scrub and has a working knowledge and understanding of all types of surgical procedures. Sets up, scrubs and prepares for procedures at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless otherwise directed by Circulating RN.
  • Recognizes breaks in aseptic technique and responds appropriately. Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
  • Demonstrates functional knowledge and the ability to identify emergency situations using sound judgment and recognizes the scope of the Surgical Technician.
  • Demonstrates competence in care of specimens and accurately handles specimens at all times.
  • Assists in positioning, prepping and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
  • Performs services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of Circulating RN.
  • Always maintains an orderly and sterile instrument table for the purpose of efficiency and anticipates needs of surgeon during operative phase.
  • Cleans and prepares room between procedures and after case; restocks supplies.
  • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts and good judgment within the Operating Room Technician’s scope of practice.
  • Indicates an understanding of the cleaning techniques by separating the following items according to the cleaning technique required; cannulated items, metal instruments, glassware, rubber, take-apart instruments, scopes, drills, electric cords, etc. Uses proper cleaning and rinsing detergents relative to type and amount and follows correct procedure according to the manufacture’s recommendation.
  • Demonstrates competency in the operation of instrument washer/ultrasonic cleaner correctly prepares and loads items according to instruction. Demonstrates knowledge of cleaning/decontamination and sterilizing fiber optic endoscopes. Appropriately, leak tests all flexible endoscopes.
  • Demonstrates competency in packaging techniques, use of appropriate package according to size, proper labeling of contents and expiration dates, proper sealing, proper safeguarding of items needing protection in packaging (sharp and delicate).
  • Reports and documents missing or broken items and instruments to Director. Selects and inspects all instruments, assembles sets of instruments. Arranges items for effective sterilization. Wraps, seals and labels all items appropriately.
  • Exhibits knowledge in determining the methods to be used to care for instruments, including the removal of protein and corrosion and in the sorting of instruments for repair.
  • Demonstrates competency to perform and read the test results of the sterilization indicators including the Bowie-Dick test and biological indicators for each method of sterilization. Documents the appropriate information on the sterilization logs to meet standards for insuring and tracking items that have been sterilized.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in the operation of each mode of sterilization including selection of method of sterilization according to manufactures recommendations and proper selection of cycles. Reports any failure of sterilization to director in a timely fashion.
  • Available on an “on-call” basis as needed.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a graduate from an approved Surgical Technician program or a Licensed Practical Nurse with surgical technologist experience. Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider status is required upon hire. 
  • Must possess ability to comply with the Department’s universal precautions procedure through the use of personal protective equipment.

Preferred Requirements

  • Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist experience is preferred.

  • This is a full-time (40 hours a week), benefit eligible position.
