Position Summary

The Surgical Technologist responds to patients' needs that range from basic life support to varied surgical interventions. Care is provided to patients of all ages, from neonates to the elderly. Call rotation is required. The role of the Surgical Technologist requires collaboration with OB/GYN Manager, OB/GYN staff, physicians, and ancillary staff. He/she performs assigned duties in the care of the OB patient, assists with surgical procedure, and helps in the maintenance of the surgery suite. All work is performed under the direction of a Registered Nurse in accordance with the mission statement, policies, procedures, philosophy and objectives of the hospital, nursing service, and the department.


  • Accepts call rotation.
  • Maintains good working relationships with surgeons and staff. Assists surgeons.
  • Informs appropriate individuals that supplies need reordering.
  • Prepares routine supplies and equipment required for surgical procedures.
  • Rotates stock and maintains inventory in OR rooms.
  • Ensures the delivery of safe patient care by being cognizant of the patient's Bill of Rights, the Hospital Disaster Plan, Fire and Bomb Threat, Infection Control Plans, and the protection of the patients' physical and psychological privacy.
  • Demonstrates technical competency in performance of required skills.
  • Demonstrates appropriate utilization of resources and equipment.
  • Prepares and handles specimens according to hospital procedure.
  • Knowledge of aseptic practice.
  • Performs instrument, sponge, and sharp counts according to policy.
  • Assumes responsibility for own actions.
  • Accepts any other job related activities.
  • Care will be provided in OR in accordance with VBH policies, procedures, and physician orders.
  • Monday through Friday with week and weekend call rotation care will be provided to surgical patients until case load is complete.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • CPR, current.

Preferred Requirements

  • Formal instruction for surgical technology in a technical or vocational institution preferred.
