About Vidant Medical Center

Vidant Medical Center is a fully accredited, 900+ bed regional referral facility encompassing a Level-1 Trauma Center and extensive inpatient and outpatient services including intensive and intermediate care, pediatrics, bariatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pain management and psychiatry.

Responsibilities

  • Follow ethical codes that protect the confidentiality of information.
  • Interpret messages simultaneously or consecutively into specified languages, English and Spanish, maintaining message content, context, and style as much as possible.
  • Conduct and administer fiscal operations, including accounting, planning budgets, authorizing expenditures, establishing rates for services, and coordinating financial reporting.
  • Direct, supervise and evaluate work activities of interpreters and translators.  Establish work schedules and assignments for staff, according to workload and availability.
  • Translate written materials into specified languages.  Proofread, edit, and revise translated materials. Check translations of technical terms and terminology to ensure that they are accurate and remain consistent throughout translation revisions.
  • Maintain communication between department heads by attending meetings and coordinating interdepartmental functioning.
  • Review and analyze activities and data to aid planning and risk management and to improve Language Services utilization.  Establish objectives and evaluative or operational criteria for Language Access Services.
  • Plan, implement and administer programs and services in a health care or medical setting, including personnel administration, training, and coordination of interpreter and translator staff.
  • Direct or conduct recruitment, hiring and training of interpreters and translators.  Train and supervise other translators or interpreters.
  • Educate patients, families, providers, and staff about the roles and functions of health care interpreters.  

Minimum Requirements

  • Four year undergraduate degree in either foreign language education (major or minor) in an English speaking country or non-language education in a non-English speaking country.   Master's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Public Administration, or Public Health preferred.
  • Interpreter training (such as Bridging the Gap, AHEC interpreter training, or equivalent interpreter training program) is preferred. 
  • Must demonstrate language proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and interpretation in primary and secondary languages equivalent to the Interagency Languagne Roundtable (ILR) skill level 3 or the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) oral and written Advanced-High level or greater.  Translation proficiency at level 3 (ILR) preferred.  National certification as a Certified Medical Interpreter or Certified Healthcare Interpreter is preferred.
  •           1- 3 years related experience.
  • Two or more years of interpreting experience, preferably in a medical setting.  One or more years of hospital experience is required. One or more years of supervisory experience is required.  Education or work experience in candidate's non-native country is preferred.
