About The East Carolina Heart Institute

The East Carolina Heart Institute is the first in North Carolina devoted exclusively to education, research, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The employees in this option report directly to the administrator or designee for the service line in regards to scheduling, performance review, and adherence to option intentions.

  • Employees will rotate within the designated service line.
  • Full-time (0.9) FTE positions will work 72 hours per pay period at current base pay with a $5/hour differential; overtime will be paid for any hours over 40 in a week.  Full-time benefits will apply.
  • Employees may be scheduled to work an additional 12-hour shift every two weeks to meet patient care requirements and professional organization’s staffing guidelines (if available) will be used.
  • SLAT nurses are eligible for shifts of call pay and callback rate of pay if called in.
  • Base rate is paid for: orientation, educational activities, meetings, committee time, instructor time, vacation buyback, vacation payout upon termination/resignation/transfer to SNP from this option.
  • SLAT employees first commitment expectation is to work their FTE value within their service line.  Their supervisor must approve any scheduled time commitment outside the service line.  SLAT employees are subject to institutional policies regarding relocation to meet patient needs.
  • SLAT employees are required to work two major and three minor holidays. Holiday time will be paid at time and a half.  Major holidays are:  Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day,  New Year’s Day.  Minor Holidays are all other Holidays.
  • SLAT employees will rotate shifts and must be flexible in length of shifts worked.  SLAT employees are subject to modifications to these work schedule requirements based on service line staffing needs.   Schedules may be modified after posting.
  • SLAT employees will use FlexWork to manage their schedule, which includes SLAT employees scheduling their shifts from posted open shifts after the shifts have come available.
  • SLAT employees will be eligible for standard VH Incentive Program.
  • SLAT employees are required to work every other weekend unless administrator or designee determines staffing needs are greater on other shifts.
  • Employees in this option are eligible for shift or weekend differential, charge nurse pay, or coach pay. 
  • SLAT employees are eligible for RISE.  The RISE level salary adjustments will be applied the base rate of pay.
  • SLAT nurses who do not successfully complete PBDS will have an orientation plan and must demonstrate competence. They will be paid at the base rate during the orientation. A PBDS re-assessment will be made and discussion regarding SLAT or core position (or termination) will be made based on results and clinical performance.
  • Six shifts of orientation will be offered.  Additional orientation time must be negotiated with the administrator or designee. 
  • The SLAT program is not a permanent staffing option and will be evaluated on at least an annual basis.
  • If it is determined that a SLAT member can not meet the minimum requirements of the SLAT staffing option, the management team reserves the right to move the employee from a SLAT position to another position. 

Minimum Requirements

  • BSN or ADN and current NC RN licensure required.
  • 3 years Cardiac Experience, with CVICU experience preferred.  If you do not have CVICU experience, then Cardiac ICU experience is required.
  • Positions available from 7p-7a. 
  • SLAT positions float to all areas of cardiac, both ICU's and Intermediate.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with heart monitors, IABP, temp pacer, arctic sun, ventilators, impella device, regular swans and SV02 swansand inner cool caths is recommended 
  • BSN
  • CCRN certification

Other Information

  • Shifts will be straight nights
  • 60% rotation to the CIU and CVIU
