About The East Carolina Heart Institute

The East Carolina Heart Institute is the first in North Carolina devoted exclusively to education, research, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The institute is associated with Vidant Medical Center and East Carolina University. The primary facilities that make up the Heart Institute are located on the campuses of Vidant Medical Center and ECU’s Brody School of Medicine. We use the most advanced equipment and techniques to manage both familiar and rare cardiovascular problems. Position Summary

Primary Population

  • Immediate post-op recovery of coronary artery bypass grafts, valve repair/replacements, robotic surgery and minimally invasive surgery, aneurysm and endovascular grafts. Typically see ~ 1200 cases/year
  • Skills that will be utilized are continuous infusion medication management, pain management, wound care, arterial line maintenance, central line maintenance, pulmonary arterial catheter management, tracheotomy patients, chest tubes, mechanical ventilation, and continuous cardiac monitoring. 
  • Technological expertise in Cardiopulmonary Support Devices such as intra-aortic balloon pumps, NxStage, Impella, Centrimag, and HeartMate. CVICU Nurses may be eligible to train as ECMO specialists after one year in the ICU environment.
  • Clinical ladder is promoted for staff to grow professionally and our team is committed to making staff successful with this endeavor.  Professional organization membership and certification are encouraged at the two year mark of employment. The ideal CVICU candidate is someone who sees the cardiac surgery patient population as their passion and places quality/safe patient care at the forefront of his/her practice.  Teamwork is of paramount importance. 
  • 24-bed unit set up in pod settings with four beds in each pod. Designed such that supplies are in close proximity including pyxis stations in each room with commonly used supplies


  • RN ratio: 1:1 or 1:2 for ICU patients, 1:4 for IU patients.
  • Flexible scheduling options with self-scheduling 
  • Professional staff development opportunities that promote expert clinical and leadership pathways

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state.
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit requirements.
