About The East Carolina Heart Institute

The East Carolina Heart Institute is the first in North Carolina devoted exclusively to education, research, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The institute is associated with Vidant Medical Center and East Carolina University. The primary facilities that make up the Heart Institute are located on the campuses of Vidant Medical Center and ECU’s Brody School of Medicine. We use the most advanced equipment and techniques to manage both familiar and rare cardiovascular problems. Our integration of basic science and clinical research, along with the clinical practice of medicine and surgery, ensures that patients receive the latest, most promising treatment options based on thorough review of their individual needs.

We are looking for a Staff Nurse to join our Cardiac Catherization Lab 


  • 7 procedure rooms (3 single plane, 2 biplane, 1 endovascular, and 1 endovascular/cardiac)

  • Located 1st floor of the East Carolina Heart Institute

 Primary Population

  • Adult cardiac and endovascular cases

  • Adult and pediatric congenital heart cases


  • 40+ hour workweek

  • Procedural nursing:  1:1 patient/nurse ratio for non-emergent cases.

  • CALL and LATE team assignment obligations:  Frequency dependent upon number of current staff when schedule is made.  These teams consist of two RNs and 2 CVTs.

  • Weekend/Holiday inpatient elective case assignments.  Staff mostly volunteer, but staff are assigned as needed when no one has volunteered.

  • Schedule consists of four 10-hr or five 8-hr days days/week plus any weekend/holiday CALL assignments.

  • 1-2 Holiday assignments/year.

  • Volunteer teams for holiday and Sunday inpatient electives.

Minimum Requirements 

  • BSN or ADN and current NC RN licensure required.

  • 1 + year Cath Lab experience preferred, OR 1+ year Medical Center ICU or ED experience, OR 2+ years Stepdown Cardiac.

  • ACLS certified. 

Other Information

  • Regular full-time (.90  FTE) 36 hours/week other hours as needed. Normal hours are 8, 9 or 10 hour shifts starting at 7:30am - 6:00pm, Monday - Friday with some weekend rotation (usually out of every 6 to 7 weekends), Emergency Call Team and Late Team Obligations.
