Vidant Medical Center is an 900+ bed Level I Trauma Center, regional referral hospital and is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health. We serve as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Our Nurse Residency Program:

The Vidant Medical Center (VMC) New Graduate Nurse Residency Program is designed to build both confidence and competence in new graduate nurse entering their professional careers. The residency program focuses on Clinical Skill Development, Professional Development, and Mentorship/Support.

The Nurse Residency Program provides an extensive orientation to the roles and responsibilities associated with professional practice. This process is a minimum of 16 to 22 weeks, depending upon the specific clinical setting. 

As a Nurse Resident, you will:   

  • Be a part of a cohort of other new graduate nurses.  If you are a current Vidant Medical Center employee, you must give the required 2-week notice to your current department before starting the Nurse Residency Program.
  • Work side by side with a dedicated clinical coach throughout your orientation 
  • Participate in simulation laboratory experiences
  • Receive mentorship from a nurse educator
  • Attend cornerstone sessions designed to stimulate critical thinking skills
  • Participate in classroom activities that address key clinical topics
  • Participate in Nursing Councils and other professional groups within the organization

We accept new graduate nurses into the following service lines:

  • Adult Medical Services - Family Medicine, Telemetry, MICU, Medical Intermediate, Nephrology, Internal Medicine
  • Behavioral Health Services
  • Cancer Services – Outpatient Infusion, General Oncology, Surgical Oncology
  • Cardiac Services – CICU, Cardiac Intermediate, CVICU, Cardiovascular Intermediate
  • Emergency Services – Adult and Children’s
  • Trauma and Surgical Services – Bariatric General, SICU, Surgical Intermediate, NSICU, Neuroscience Intermediate
  • Rehab Services – General, TBI, SCI
  • Women’s and Children’s Services – L&D, NICU, PICU, Pediatrics

Note: You will be asked in the application process to list your top 2 choices, please keep in mind that not all of these units will have positions available or may have limited openings. Please be open to exploring opportunities in units that will provide you will a solid foundation to begin your nursing career. We will review applicants based on units listed, if the unit you list has no positions you may not be considered for an interview. We screen for “best fit” please answer all questions, answer honestly and accurately.  


Program Requirements

  • ADN or BSN required
  • North Carolina RN license must be active prior to start date
  • 0-6 months of hospital RN experience

Requires two-year commitment to Vidant Medical Center. Commitment period begins at the end of your Residency orientation period of 16,18 or 22 weeks. During this time you must remain in a Full-time position, you may not transfer to Part-time or supplemental pool.

After the Residency orientation period, unit transfers are not allowed until you have completed one year of your contract on the unit that you were hired.

Shift and Weekend Differentials start at the end of the Residency orientation period.

Failure to complete contracted commitment time will result in financial repayment to Vidant Medical Center.

Reference letters must be submitted with Job Application.                           

Applicant must attach two (2) Clinical References on school letterhead from nursing instructors with at least one (1) being a senior level instructor.

Other Information

  • Full-time position, 36 hours per week
  • You will work the schedule of your clinical coach(s) throughout orientation
  • Benefits begin on first day of employment
