About the Outer Banks Hospital

The Outer Banks Hospital, located in Nags Head, North Carolina, is a full service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The hospital opened in March 2002 and is one of the newest hospitals in eastern North Carolina. The hospital's 21 private rooms are designed to meet the needs of our coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 250,000 in the summer season. The labor and delivery area consists of two labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum rooms, a five-bed nursery, a dedicated caesarean-section operating room and a triage room.

Position Summary

Speech therapist is responsible for developing and implementing therapeutic speech and language development program and services.  He/she is also examines, tests, diagnose and administers treatments for patients with speech and language disorders, hearing disorders and or motor disorders. Speech therapist shall be responsible for observing and evaluating diagnostic and treatment effects and communicating results with the appropriate medical and health care staff.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates responsibility for Patient Safety as measured by proper patient positioning and instruction, safe infection control methods, accuracy of patient identification, follow up on Safety Intelligence (SI) events, SBAR handoff technique.

  • Demonstrates ability to perform Accurate and Reliable Patient Care utilizing Rehab equipment and proper technique according to established departmental procedures and protocols to plan, organize and conduct programs designed to help patients regain receptive and expressive language skills, speech fluency, vocal and oral motor competence, articulation and auditory skills.

  • Demonstrates ability to test and evaluate patients for therapeutic speech and language development needs; assesses availability of in-clinic or on-site facilities, equipment or services. Monitors patient progress throughout treatment; prepares and maintains records and reports as appropriate.  Facilitates behavior management in patients and families as appropriate.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Minimum of Masters of Science or a Masters of Arts degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited university. All course work for ASHA certification in Speech–Language Pathology must be complete. Must have a North Carolina license in Speech-Language Pathology or be eligible for same.  A certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology awarded by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association is required.  Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider status is required upon hire. 

Experience: One year of experience preferred.
