Position Summary

The Speech/Language Pathologist (SLP) Clinical Specialist serves as a leader, innovator, coordinator, and change agent in the pursuit of clinical excellence and the professional development of staff in the regional hospitals in the speech language pathology practice. This role holds the key responsibility of identifying areas of professional growth and development for the SLP discipline and completing education and instruction for staff skill development. The SLP Clinical Specialist executes staff development processes in collaboration with the Rehabilitation Therapy Manager of the department. The SLP Clinical Specialist works with the department manager to ensure quality patient outcomes and support of evidenced based clinical skill development for the SLPs of the department. The Speech Language Pathologist Clinical Specialist assist the department manager in developing and supervising the clinical skill set of the SLPs of the department. This position assists the manager with coordinating the development and evaluation of staff orientation related to SLP and clinical practice.

The SLP Clinical Specialist also administers diagnostic and treatment services to patients referred to the Department of Speech/Language Pathology at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital and maintains records pertinent to such services. He/She shall be responsible for evaluating any communication impairment that interferes with an individual's premorbid level of function and providing appropriate treatment services. The Speech/Language Pathologist shall also be responsible for providing diagnostic and treatment services involving any swallowing impairment/dysfunction. The Speech/Language Pathologist is directly accountable to the manager for the quality of patient care delivered. He/She modifies and delivers care that is specific to the age, growth, and development of patients according to Departmental scope of services.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's Degree or Higher
  • All course work for ASHA certification in Speech/Language Pathology must be completed.
  • N.C. licensure or eligibility for it is required and certification of Clinical Competence in Speech/Language Pathology awarded by the American Speech/Language and Hearing Association or equivalent academic and clinical training.
  • Five years or more experience in direct clinical care in a medical setting with 1 year of experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • Demonstrate evidence of continuous professional development through ongoing education, research and /or certification in specialty area.
  • Ability to function in a self-directed role.
  • Ability to communicate effectively: written and verbally.
  • Special interest and experience in neurologically based speech and language disorders preferred.
