We are located in Greenville, NC which is located in the heart of North Carolina’s coastal plain, just a short drive from the famous Outer Banks beaches, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the attractions in the Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill). Greenville is home to East Carolina University, an integral part of North Carolina’s excellent university system. We are currently searching for a Float Pool Registered Nurse for our Surgical Services Division. This includes coverage of our SICU, SIU, BGSU, Neuro ICU, Neuro IU, and Orthopedics units.


  • The employees in this option report directly to the administrator or designee for the service line in regards to scheduling, performance review, and adherence to option intentions.
  • Employees in this option will rotate within the designated service line.
  • The positions are limited to 0.5, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.0 based on the service line administrator discretion and need to be kept updated on the employee status of the FlexWork profile for all Float Pool employees for accurate tracking to hours scheduled in FlexWork.
  • Full-time positions (1.0 FTE) will work 80 hours and 0.9 FTE positions will work 72 hours per pay period at current base pay with a $5/hour differential; overtime will be paid for any hours over 40 in a week. Full-time benefits will apply.
  • 0.5, 0.6 and 0.9 employees may be scheduled to work an additional 12-hour shift every two weeks to meet patient care requirements and professional organization’s staffing guidelines (if available) will be used.
  • Float Pool nurses are eligible for shifts of call pay and callback rate of pay if called in.
  • Base rate is paid for: orientation, educational activities, meetings, committee time, instructor time, vacation buyback, vacation payout upon termination/resignation/transfer to SNP from this option.
  • Float Pool nurses first commitment expectation is to work their FTE value within their service line. Their supervisor must approve any scheduled time commitment outside the service line. Float Pool nurses are subject to institutional policies regarding relocation to meet patient needs.
  • Float Pool nurses are required to work two major and three minor holidays. Holiday time will be paid at time and a half. Major holidays are: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day. Minor Holidays are all other Holidays.
  • Float Pool nurses will rotate shifts and must be flexible in length of shifts worked. Float Pool nurses are subject to modifications to these work schedule requirements based on service line staffing needs. Schedules may be modified after posting.

Float Pool nurses will use FlexWork to manage their schedule, which includes Float Pool nurses scheduling their shifts from posted open shifts after the shifts have come available. Float Pool nurses are not to have their shifts prescheduled in advance.

  • Float Pool nurses will be eligible for standard Vidant Medical Center Incentive Programs.
  • Float Pool nurses are required to work every other weekend unless administrator or designee determines staffing needs are greater on other shifts.
  • Employees in this option are eligible for shift or weekend differential, charge nurse pay, or coach pay.
  • Float Pool nurses are eligible for RISE. The RISE level salary adjustments will be applied the base rate of pay.
  • Float Pool nurses who cannot provide direct patient care in their Float Pool nurses role will be paid their base rate for hours worked.
  • Float Pool nurses who do not successfully complete PBDS will have an orientation plan and must demonstrate competence. They will be paid at the base rate during the orientation. A PBDS re-assessment will be made and discussion regarding Float Pool or core position (or termination) will be made based on results and clinical performance.
  • The service line may develop an education contract with general or intermediate care nurses to acquire the next level of skill.
  • Internal candidates must have at least “meets expectations” on their most recent performance appraisal.
  • Six shifts of orientation will be offered. Additional orientation time must be negotiated with the administrator or designee.
  • The Float Pool nursing program is not a permanent staffing option and will be evaluated on at least an annual basis.
  • If it is determined that a Float Pool nurse cannot meet the minimum requirements of the Float Pool staffing option, the management team reserves the right to move the employee from a Float Pool nursing position to another position.

Minimum Requirements

  • Three (3) years of applicable RN experience is required.
  • Current NC RN licensure
  • BLS through the American Heart Association is required.
  • ACLS is required.
  • ICU experience is required.
  • BSN is preferred.
