The James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital at Vidant Medical Center offers 197 beds and bassinets and an array of specialized services unequaled in eastern North Carolina. Our patient-and-family-centered care philosophy is more than a mantra; it's the guiding force of our efforts and has been for nearly 30 years. It is expressed in tangible ways throughout our recent 78,000-square-foot expansion.

Women's Health is looking for a float pool RN to provide care across the division.  The units included in this scope are High Risk Labor and Delivery, High Risk Antepartum, and Mother/Baby.

About Women's Care:

As a tertiary referral center for 29 counties in eastern North Carolina, Women's Care provides care to the highest risk obstetrical patient to the care for low-risk patients in a birthing center environment.  This unit delivers almost 4000 babies annually.  Unique to Labor and Delivery units, this unit provides a model that crosses the continuum of obstetrical services including Triage, High-risk Antepartum, Labor and Delivery, C-sections, PACU and newborn care.

Family Centered Maternity Newborn Care is a strong value of Vidant Medical Center.  Our goal is to keep mothers and babies together utilizing mother/baby couplet care as our model.  We are proud to be one of four designated Baby Friendly Hospitals in North Carolina.  We are also a NC 5 Star Hospital.


  • The Float/SLAT RN will provide direct patient care according to unit scope of service and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service appropriate to the age of the patient and acuity level.  During any shift may float to any area of Women's where the need is the greatest.

  • The employees in this option report directly to the Administrator of Womens Services or her designee for the service line in regards to scheduling, performance review, and adherence to option intentions.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state
  • 3 years applicable RN experience within Women's Service Line
  • Experience with High Risk L&D, Mother/Baby and Antepartum required
  • BLS through the American Heart Association
  • ACLS

Preferred Requirements

  • BSN Preferred
  • 5 or more years experience in High Risk Obstetrics (with high volume and fast pace)
  • Fetal Monitoring Certification
  • NRP

Other Information

  • One Full Time Position.
  • Rotating Shifts or Straight Nights.
  • Base pay with $5/hour differential after orientation; overtime will be paid for any hours over 40 in a week.
  • Float/SLAT nurses are eligible for shifts of call pay and callback rate of pay if called in.
  • Float/SLAT employees will rotate shifts and must be flexible in length of shifts worked.  Float/SLAT employees are subject to modifications to the work schedule requirements based on service line staffing needs.  Schedules may be modified after posting.
  • Float/SLAT employees are required to work every other weekend, unless administrator determines staffing needs are greater on other shifts.
