Position Summary

Palliative Care is a multidisciplinary approach of specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses or life-limiting conditions.  Patients can receive benefit from palliative care services across the spectrum of their disease process.    Care that may be provided in PCU include, but are not limited to: 

  • Dialysis          
  • IV antibiotics            
  • Symptom management
  • Routine medication         
  • Palliative radiation       
  • Hospice and Comfort Care

                    
Registered nurses provide care in conjunction with the care partner and medical team. The Palliative Care Unit provides care for patients who have potentially life-limiting conditions.  Care includes interventions to relieve symptoms often associated with these conditions such as pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite and difficulty sleeping.   The multidisciplinary palliative care team strives to meet the goals of care as identified by the patient or the patient’s surrogate- and additionally to provide the best quality of life possible for both the patient and his/her family.    The average length of stay is 4-6 days.

Skills that will be utilized are continuous infusion medication management, pain management, wound care, central lines, tracheotomy patients, IV start skills, and peripheral lab draws.    Advanced skills such as airway management.  
  
Professional organization membership and certification are encouraged at the two year mark of employment.  PCU takes pride in our performance on quality indicators.  Our team is looking for staff passionate in end of life care, who are dedicated to ensuring quality/safe patient care is at the forefront of their practice.   

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state.
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit requirements.
