About James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital

The James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital at Vidant Medical Center offers 197 beds and bassinets and an array of specialized services unequaled in eastern North Carolina. Our patient-and-family-centered care philosophy is more than a mantra; it's the guiding force of our efforts and has been for nearly 30 years. It is expressed in tangible ways throughout our recent 78,000-square-foot expansion.


40 Beds with 28 Mother/Baby and 12 for Antepartum.

Primary Population:

  • Obstetrics-These are usually postpartum patients, some low-risk not continuously fetal monitored patients, and occasionally gyn patients.
  • Antepartum- These are intermediate beds with continuously fetal monitor capable rooms for high risk antepartum with diagnosis such as PROM, previas, mild pre-eclampsia, etc.  These patients can stay from a few days to months for fetal monitoring and maternal well-being.


  • Obstetrics RN ratio 1:6 (usually 3 couplets).    
  • Antepartum RN ratio 1:3-4 (depending on acuity and patient monitoring status).
  • 1 Charge nurse without assignment with both areas together as one.
  • Self-scheduling with departmental guidelines.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state.
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit requirement

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with High Risk Antepartum/Deliveries

  • This position is for straight night shifts.
