About the Medical Intermediate Unit

MIU is a 49 bed unit with 9 beds dedicated to vent weaning. Its primary patient population includes caring for those with the following:

  • Respiratory failure
  • Pneumonia
  • Pulmonary edema
  • COPD exacerbation, sepsis, sickle cell anemia
  • Liver and renal failure
  • DKA, GI bleed, non-acute/active stroke
  • Infectious disease including AFB isolation 

Technical monitoring on the unit includes: continuous cardiac and CVP monitoring, arterial lines, mechanical ventilation, CPAP, continuous bi-pap, and synchronized cardio-version.

RN to patient ratio on the unit is 1:4 and 1:3 with vent weaning patients. There is always a charge nurse without patient assignment to float throughout the unit, 8 CNAs on day shift and 6 on nights. In addition to core staff there are 3 case managers, 3 respiratory therapists, a pharmacist, physical therapist, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and 2 dietitions always available to the unit.

  • National recognition at NTI in 2013 for "2+ years without a VAP"
  • Greatest reduction of Cauti, Clabsi and Skin Infections
  • 2013 MIU had the highest number of published perspective journals with the medical division at VMC
  • 2013 recognized for bundle compliance >95%

 Responsibilities

  • Delivers direct, quality patient care, utilizing a basic clinical skill level and knowledge base.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates/revises a plan of care.
  • Attends educational programs and staff orientation which promotes personal and professional development.
  • Participate in Service Excellence Program. 

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state.
  • Minimum 6 months of acute inpatient hospital experience (new graduates must apply to the nurse residency program).
  • BLS certification required.  

Preferred Requirements

  • BSN highly preferred (will consider those currently enrolled in or planning to enroll in a BSN program).
  • 2+ years of experience on inpatient med-surge unit.
  • General med-surge experience desired, must be able to assess patients.
  • Experience in telemetry, medication drips, and ventilators needed.
  • PCCN, RN-BC, or CMSRN certification.
  • ACLS preferred.

Other Information

  • Full-time positions available.
  • Unit Shadow is required as part of the interview process.
  • Shift/schedule based on unit needs at the time of orientation.
