About our New Grad Nurse Residency Program

The Vidant Medical Center (VMC) New Graduate Nurse Residency Program is designed to build both confidence and competence in new graduate nurse entering their professional careers. The residency program focuses on Clinical Skill Development, Professional Development, and Mentorship/Support.

The Nurse Residency Program provides an extensive orientation to the roles and responsibilities associated with professional practice. This process is a minimum of 16 to 22 weeks, depending upon the specific clinical setting.

As a Nurse Resident, you will:

  • Be a part of a cohort of other new graduate nurses. If you are a current Vidant Medical Center employee, you must give the required 2-week notice to your current department before starting the Nurse Residency Program.
  • Work side by side with a dedicated clinical coach throughout your orientation
  • Participate in simulation laboratory experiences
  • Receive mentorship from a nurse educator
  • Attend cornerstone sessions designed to stimulate critical thinking skills
  • Participate in classroom activities that address key clinical topics
  • Participate in Nursing Councils and other professional groups within the organization

Program Requirements

  • ADN or BSN required
  • North Carolina RN license must be active prior to start date
  • 0-6 months of hospital RN experience

Requires two-year commitment to Vidant Medical Center. Commitment period begins at the end of your Residency orientation period of 16, 18, 20, or 22 weeks. During this time you must remain in a Full-time position, you may not transfer to Part-time or supplemental pool.

After the Residency orientation period, unit transfers are not allowed until you have completed one year of your contract on the unit that you were hired.

Shift and Weekend Differentials start at the end of the Residency orientation period.

Reference letters must be submitted prior to interviewing. Applicant can attach references to the application or drop off at our office. We require two (2) Clinical References on school letterhead from nursing instructors with at least one (1) being a senior level instructor.
