We opened in March 2002 as a joint venture between Vidant Health and Chesapeake Regional Healthcare. Our facility includes eighteen acute care medical-surgical beds, two labor and delivery/recovery/post-partum beds, a level II nursery bed, a designated caesarian section room, three operating rooms, outpatient and diagnostic services along with a 24-hour emergency department. Affiliated with The Outer Banks Hospital is The Outer Banks Medical Group (a Vidant Medical Group partner) which is comprised of eight physician practices.

As a community hospital, we offer a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services. We meet the health care needs of our coastal community, whose year-round population of 35,000 swells to 250,000 in the summer months.

Position Summary

The RN is responsible and accountable for providing and coordinating patient care.  The RN identifies and addresses patient’s needs and priorities through assessment, planning and collaboration with other health care providers.  The RN will execute physician orders and supervise the implementation of nursing interventions. The RN functions as a patient advocate representing the patient’s interests when illness prevents an individual from being physically or emotionally able to express their own feelings or thoughts.  The RN evaluates response to care through the outcomes of clinical results, patient satisfaction and acceptable cost.


The RN is responsible for assisting with the preparation, care and recovery of patients undergoing Radiology exams or procedures.


Essential Functions

  • Performs initial nursing assessment to include psychosocial, sensory perception, function/mobilization, skin integrity, age related changes and nutritional needs. Reviews pertinent history, risk assessment (e.g. falls risk), patient safety checklist (e.g. MRI checklist).

  • Charting reflects the nursing process and changes in patient status.  

  • Documents identified teaching needs and implements plan including patient and/or significant other.

  • Completes on-going assessments and documents as appropriate and according to hospital policy.

  • Documents evaluation of nursing intervention including patient response.

  • Interprets changes in patient status and intervenes appropriately.

  • Administers medications & IV therapy according to established policies and procedures, taking into consideration the pharmacological effects for the patient population and patient’s response to medications.

  • Responds quickly and appropriately to emergency situations.

  • Coordinates delivery of nursing care in an organized manner in compliance with hospital and patient care services, department policies, protocols, and procedures utilizing a collaborative model.

  • Follows appropriate pain management guidelines.

  • Performs patient care and treatments with consideration to cultural diversity, patient population served, according to established policy and procedures.  Recognizes and administers to psychosocial/spiritual needs of the patient/family and significant others.

  • Performs POC (Point of Care Testing) procedures accurately.

  • Assists other units as assigned.

  • Follows established infection control and standard precautions policies and procedures.

  • Shift reports and communications are timely, pertinent and accurate.

  • Demonstrates an awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for own professional practice.

  • Practices collaboratively with colleagues and other members of the healthcare team.

  • Is aware of standards of practice for profession or specialty and integrates such into daily practice.

  • Participates in elective educational offerings.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Performs patient assessments according to hospital policy.

Role Specific Job Funtions:

  • Works well with ED, Med Surg, AMU, Radiology, Lab departments to provide coordinated patient care.

  • Utilizes EHR charting tool effectively in documenting patient assessment.

  • Completes charges for all procedures accurately.

  • Accurately accesses Pyxis devices for stock items and medications.

  • Performs daily review of all Radiology outpatient schedules and contact all next day patients. Prepare for scheduled next day procedures and discuss with Radiologist.

  • Assists in prep and recovery of patients undergoing radiology exams and procedures.

  • Assists in transfer and care of critical or monitored radiology patients.

  • Assists in care of patients post contrast extravasation.

  • Participates in interdisciplinary rounds, Vidant service line meetings, etc..

  • Prepares necessary productivity and tracking reports.

  • Coordinates paperwork for Mammo, Low Dose CT, Colonoscopy, other TOBH programs.

Minimum Requirements


Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state. Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider status is required upon hire.  AHA ACLS certification required within 6 months of hire.


Requires a minimum of 1 year in an acute nursing setting. Working knowledge of equipment utilization, maintenance and safety.
