18 Bed Palliative Care Unit: 17 Palliative Care Beds; 1 Pediatric Palliative Bed

Primary Population:

The palliative care unit provides services to patients requiring end of life care, including: 

  • Comfort Care
  • Hospice
  • Palliative Care

Registered nurses provide care in conjunction with the care partner and medical team. The average length of stay is 4-6 days.

Clinical ladder is promoted for staff to grow professionally and our team is committed to making staff successful with this endeavor.  Professional organization membership and certification are encouraged at the two year mark of employment.  PCU takes pride in our performance on quality indicators.  Our team is looking for staff passionate in end of life care, who are dedicated to ensuring quality/safe patient care is at the forefront of their practice.  

Staffing/Scheduling

  • RN ratio 1:5                       
  • Flexible scheduling options with self-scheduling
  • Professional staff development opportunities that promote expert clinical and leadership pathways

Positions

  • 0.9 FTE: (3) 12 hr. shifts/week, every other weekend and every other recognized holiday

Orientation

  • 4-6 weeks or longer based upon experience and identified opportunities
  • Work “clinical coaches” schedule, may also have an alternate coach identified
  • Scheduled on day and night shift

Dress Code

  • Black scrubs, white scrubs, or combination of both (Refer to VMC Dress Code Policy)

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state.
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit requirements.
