Position Summary

The population consists of the neuro-medicine and neurosurgical following subspecialties that is not limited to:

  • Acute Stroke management (ischemic, hemorrhagic, SAH, etc.)
  • Post Neuro-surgical management (craniotomy, lumbar drains, complex neuro-spine)
  • Seizure management (epilepsy, post-ictal and pseudo-seizures)
  • Demyelinating diseases of the brain (Multiple Sclerosis)
  • Demyelinating Polyneuropathies (Guillain-Barre) 

Patients in this setting may require frequent neurological assessments and collaborative evaluations to manage intermediate care status. Continuity of care is facilitated in this unit through ICU transition for optimization of clinical outcomes.

Skills that will be utilized are NIHSS, arterial lines and central lines management, ventilator/tracheotomy patients, lumbar drains, Dobhoff/NGT placement and management, IV start skills, peripheral lab draws, arterial blood draws, various intravenous drips ie. cardiac, insulin, heparin, and cardiac monitoring. 

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate Degree or Diploma is required.
  • Bachelors Degree is preferred.
  • Current NC RN license or licensure to practice in a participating Nurse Licensure Compact state Health Care Provider is required.
  • Basic Life Support is required.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities required:  (i.e. supervision, computers, etc.) 
  • Flexibility in scheduling to meet the twenty four (24) hour needs of the patients. 
  • Possess organizational, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to utilize effective and confidential communication in patient, interdisciplinary, and staff relationships.
  • Maintains stable performance levels under conditions of pressure and multiple demands.
  • Working knowledge and experience with PC-based applications.
