About 3 South Nephrology

The Nephrology unit cares for adult patients with general medical problems and with the following sub-specialties:

  • Chronic and acute renal failure
  • Infectious disease processes
  • Radioactive iodine therapy
  • Diabetes and related long-term problems
  • Nutritional problems
  • Pulmonary disease processes
  • Patients also tend to have problems with depression and other psychosocial issues

The average nurse to patient ratio is 1:6 and work primarily 12 hour shifts. The Nephrology team is looking for RNs who are flexible and a team player. This unit orients a large number of new graduate nurses and student externs so staff must be open to teaching these students and provide a welcoming and encouraging environment. Much of the staff are involved with activities/committees on the unit and in the hospital.

3 South Nephrology is the only inpatient unit that has a "Serenity Room" for its nursing staff. This room provides a place for nurses to relax for a few moments during their shifts. The walls are painted with calming colors, soothing sounds and scents provide a wonderful oasis for the staff to enjoy.


  • Deliver direct, quality patient care, utilizing a basic clinical skill level and knowledge base.
  • To provide proficient, age specific, professional nursing skills in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the nursing care for assigned patients in accordance with legal, hospital practice and departmental policies and procedures, established standards of nursing care and practice, and as defined by the state of North Carolina.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement Activities.
  • Attends educational programs and staff orientation which promotes personal and professional development.

Minimum Requirements

  • BSN preferred or ADN
  • Current NC RN licensure required
  • BLS Certification - American Heart Association

Preferred Requirements

  • BSN highly preferred (will consider those currently enrolled in or planning to enroll in a BSN program).
  • Prefer acute care inpatient hospital experience.
  • General med-surge experience desired, must be able to assess patients head-to-toe.
  • PCCN or RN-BC certification

Other Information

  • Full-time (36 hours)
  • Unit Shadow required as a part of the interview process.
  • Primarily rotating shifts and every other weekend.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state.
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit requirements.
