18 Bed MIU B 3:1 ratio

Primary Population:

The MIU provides services to adult, acutely ill patients experiencing the following:   

  • Respiratory Failure
  • Vent and Trach Management
  • Sepsis
  • COPD Exacerbation
  • Liver and Renal Failure
  • DKA
  • GI Bleed
  • CHF
  • Sickle Cell Anemia

Registered nurses provide care in conjunction with the care partner and medical team. The unit has 1 float nurse without patient assignment and one charge nurse without patient assignment.

Skills that will be utilized are continuous infusion medication management, pain management, wound care, arterial lines, central lines, tracheotomy patients, chest tubes, mechanical ventilation, continuous cardiac monitoring, and various continuous intravenous drips. 

Clinical ladder is promoted for staff to grow professionally and our team is committed to making staff successful with this endeavor.  Professional organization membership and certification are encouraged at the two year mark of employment. MIU takes pride in our performance quality indicators.  Our team is looking for staff that sees the medical population as their passion and places quality/safe patient care at the forefront of your practice.  

Staffing/Scheduling

  • RN ratio 1:4; 1:3  with vent weaning patients                          
  • Flexible scheduling options with self-scheduling
  • Professional staff development opportunities that promote expert clinical and leadership pathways

Positions

  • 0.9 FTE: (3) 12 hr. shifts/week, (6) weekend shifts per 6 week schedule
  • Flexible staffing options: Day Shift, Night Shift, Rotating Day/Night (Based on staff preference and unit needs)

Orientation

  • Orientation based on previous experience, ranging from 6-8 weeks, 8-10 weeks and 18 weeks for new graduates
  • Assigned a primary clinical coach who will oversee orientation and provide assignments in accordance with orientation length and opportunities

Dress Code

  • Black scrubs, white scrubs, or combination of both (Refer to VMC Dress Code Policy)

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state.
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit requirements.
