Primary Population:

The population consists of multiple types of general surgery patients and includes the following: 

  • Thoracotomies (lung surgeries)
  • Amputations
  • Weight loss surgery
  • A minimal number of various vascular surgeries
  • An array of abdominal surgeries
  • Complicated appendix or gallbladder surgeries 

BGSU receives overflow of populations such as trauma, medical and neuro patients at times.  Nursing staff analyze cardiac rhythms on their patients; we are not monitored by monitor techs.  BLS is required upon hire; ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) are required to be obtained within one year.

Skills that will be utilized are wound vac. dressing changes, extensive wound management, wound drains, epidurals, arterial lines, central lines, tracheotomy patients, chest tubes, IV start skills, peripheral lab draws, arterial blood draws, various intravenous drips ie. cardiac, insulin, heparin, and cardiac monitoring.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state.
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit requirements.
