Primary Population:

The population consists of adult patients with general medical problems and with the following subspecialties:

  • Pulmonary disease processes
  • General cardiac monitoring
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • GI Disturbances
  • Hypertension
  • Infectious disease processes
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic Cardiac Processes
  • Recent surgical procedure

Registered nurses provide care in conjunction with the care partner and medical team. Assignments are based on the patient’s needs, the geographical location of the patients, and the resources available. The charge nurse does not have a patient assignment. BLS is required upon hire. Skills that will be utilized are continuous infusion medication management, pain management, wound care, central lines, tracheotomy patients, IV start skills, peripheral lab draws, and cardiac monitoring.   

Staffing/Scheduling

  • RN ratio 1:3 or 1:4                           
  • Flexible scheduling options with self-scheduling
  • Professional staff development opportunities that promote expert clinical and leadership pathways

Positions

  • 0.9 FTE: (3) 12 hr. shifts/week, (6) weekend shifts per 6 week schedule
  • Flexible staffing options: Day Shift, Night Shift, Rotating Day/Night (Based on staff preference and unit needs)

Orientation

  • Orientation based on previous experience. IU Background: 8 weeks, General Background: 12 weeks, and new graduates 16 weeks
  • Work “clinical coaches” schedule, may also have an alternate coach identified
  • Structured week-by-week program based on ideal patient situations/diagnosis—shift assignments evaluated in accordance with orientation weeks/opportunities
  • Scheduled on day and/or night shift

Dress Code

  • Black scrubs, white scrubs, or combination of both (Refer to VMC Dress Code Policy)

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state.
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit requirements.
