About The East Carolina Heart Institute

The East Carolina Heart Institute is the first in North Carolina devoted exclusively to education, research, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The institute is associated with Vidant Medical Center and East Carolina University. The primary facilities that make up the Heart Institute are located on the campuses of Vidant Medical Center and ECU’s Brody School of Medicine. We use the most advanced equipment and techniques to manage both familiar and rare cardiovascular problems. Our integration of basic science and clinical research, along with the clinical practice of medicine and surgery, ensures that patients receive the latest, most promising treatment options based on thorough review of their individual needs.

About the Cardiac ICU

  • CICU is a 24 Bed cardiac intensive care with primary focus on ST elevated MIs. Additional patient population includes Congestive Heart Failure, Cardiac Arrest with Hypothermia, Cardiogenic Shock, Thoracic Surgery Patients, and Medica ICU overflow patients. Technologies include temporary pacing, IABP, Arctic SUN, Hemodynamic monitoring Impellas and ventilators.

  • All impellas and Ecmo patients will be at a 1 to 1 ratio.

  • CICU has intensivists that are on the unit and admit all of the patients 24/7.

  • To assist the intensivitist with admissions and pt care we have APPs (nurse practitioners and Physician assistants) that are present in the unit 24/7.

  • We have flexible scheduling and promote CCRN certification. Team work and patient safety are our number one priorities.


  • Delivers direct, quality patient care, utilizing a basic clinical skill level and knowledge base.

  • Develops, implements and evaluates/revises a plan of care.

  • Attends educational programs and staff orientation which promotes personal and professional development.

  • Participate in Service Excellence Program.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state.

  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit requirements.

  • FOR EASTCARE TRANSPORT RN's: ACLS, BLS, PALS. NRP, TNCC must be obtained before the end of orientation, One specialty certification for example, CFRN or  must be obtained within 2 years of hire is required. 3 to 5 years experience as a RN is required from an ICU or ER setting.

  • The ability to treat patients under EastCare protocols is determined by the EastCare Medical Director.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
