About The East Carolina Heart Institute

The East Carolina Heart Institute is the first in North Carolina devoted exclusively to education, research, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The institute is associated with Vidant Medical Center and East Carolina University. The primary facilities that make up the Heart Institute are located on the campuses of Vidant Medical Center and ECU’s Brody School of Medicine. Position Summary

24 Bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit

Primary Population:

  • The CICU provides services to adult, acutely ill patients experiencing the following:    

  • Cardiogenic shock

  • Post-cardiac arrest

  • Hemodynamic instability

  • ECMO

  • Decompensated heart failure

  • Acute STEMI 

Registered nurses provide care in conjunction with the care partner and medical team. The twenty four beds are split into pods, with four beds in each. The unit has one charge nurse without patient assignment and a team leader, depending on volume.  

Skills that will be utilized are continuous infusion medication management, pain management, wound care, arterial line maintenance, central line maintenance, pulmonary arterial catheter management, tracheotomy patients, chest tubes, mechanical ventilation, and continuous cardiac monitoring. Additionally, CICU team members will assist providers with bedside procedures and acquire skills with devices, including Impella, Arctic Sun, NxStage, Cardiohelp and Invos. 


  • RN ratio 1:2 or 1:1 for ICU patients.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate Degree is required.

  • Bachelors Degree is preferred.

  • 0 - 2 years experience is required.

  • Current NC RN license or licensure to practice in a participating Nurse Licensure Compact state Health Care Provider is required.

  • Basic Life Support is required.
