Our goal is to enhance services that are available locally and to eliminate barriers involving time, distance and lack of awareness that sometimes prevent patients from receiving the care they need.

Primary Population:

  • 52 beds
    • Adult Unit – 23 beds.  Patients on this unit are typically between the ages of 18 and 65; are able to perform, with minimal assistance, their own ADL’s; have not been diagnosed with mental retardation; and require minimal intervention for medical (non-psychiatric) problems.
    • Geri Psych/Med Unit – 14 beds.  Patients on this unit are typically older than 65 years of age or, if younger than age 65, have medical problems that require more than minimal intervention, and have not been diagnosed with mental retardation
    • MR/MI (Mental Retardation/Mental Illness) Unit – 10 beds.  Patients on this unit have both a psychiatric illness and mental retardation.
    • Acute Unit – 5 beds.  Patients on this unit require more intensive monitoring and intervention than patients on the other units.  Patients who are at high risk for elopement or aggressive behavior or whose psychiatric condition necessitates an environment with a low level of stimulation are typically placed on this unit until their condition improves sufficiently for them to participate in the therapeutic activities on the other units.
  • Patients admitted to the BHS Unit have psychiatric disorder diagnoses such as Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Schizophrenia, Dementia, Eating Disorder, Psychotic Disorder, and Mania, for example.  Patients may also have co-occurring substance abuse disorder diagnoses and/or Mental Retardation. All patients admitted to the BHS Unit are screened, for appropriateness for admission, by a psychiatric triage team.  Both voluntary and involuntary patients are accepted for admission.
  • Average length of stay: 8-10 days
  • Average number of admissions per year: 2500-3000
  • Patient care is delivered via an interdisciplinary treatment team approach.

Staffing/Scheduling

  • RN’s and MHT’s (mental health technicians who are also NA I or NA II) provide direct patient care on each of the units.  A combination of licensed and non-licensed personnel, based on the number of patients and acuity level, is assigned to each unit.  Typically, the patient to staff ratio ranges from 3:1 to 5:1.
  • Charge nurse responsibilities are rotated among the RN’s working on a particular unit/track.  The charge nurse typically has a patient assignment but the number will be less than other staff.
  • Most staff work 12-hour shifts although a limited number of 8-hour shift positions are available.
  • Most staff are assigned to a specific unit, although all staff are required to, when necessitated by staffing/acuity issues, float to other units within BHS.
  • Typically, staff work on an assigned track – 3 12-hour shifts one week and 4 12-hour shifts on alternating weeks.

  • RN’s
  • MHT’s (either NA I or NA II)
  • Most positions are 1.0 FTE but there are a few positions at 0.9 or 0.5 FTE.

Orientation

  • Length of orientation is based, to some extent, on previous nursing experience.
  • Average length of orientation for RN’s and LPN’s is 6-7 weeks with average length of orientation for MHT’s being 4-5 weeks.
  • Orientees are assigned to one primary coach but, in order to fully orient to all the units within BHS, may have alternate coaches for some experiences 

Dress Code

  • May wear scrubs or appropriate street clothes.
  • Wearing of jeans is not permitted.
  • Staff are discouraged from wearing necklaces, bracelets, or dangling earrings.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state.
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit requirements.
