About the Outer Banks Hospital

The Outer Banks Hospital, located in Nags Head, North Carolina, is a full service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The hospital opened in March 2002 and is one of the newest hospitals in eastern North Carolina. The hospital's 21 private rooms are designed to meet the needs of our coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 250,000 in the summer season. The labor and delivery area consists of two labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum rooms, a five-bed nursery, a dedicated caesarean-section operating room and a triage room.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and records demographic and insurance information according to Departmental policies and procedures in the information system.
  • Pre-registers, registers, admits, transfers and discharges patients per departmental policies in a timely manner. Performs dual registration (office/hospital), MSPQ, etc.  Hospital registration required for 40-50% of practice patients.
  • Enters charges from coded encounter forms/charge sheets into A/R system in a timely manner. (Including entering patient demographics into computer system, entering appropriate charges in computer system and maintaining Epic software workques (charge entry, claim edit, patient account) at reasonable levels.
  • Ensures that all documents including consents, and Medicare and Insurance are signed and correctly placed in patients chart and in the information system.
  • Ascertains demographic and financial information necessary for collection. Communicates and responds with appropriate entity concerning billing issues/corrections in a timely manner.
  • Requests and collects co-pay and self-pay payments. Informs customers of their financial responsibilities.
  • Performs computer functions. Generates and disseminates reports and patient information to appropriate departments.
  • Performs Payment Entry Functions.  Required to follow correct posting processes so that accounts are maintained accurately.
  • Promptly answers phone. Demonstrates understanding of calls needing nurse attention.  Provides added assistance with Spanish speaking patients.
  • Keeps area and equipment clean and makes minor adjustments.
  • Attends departmental meetings and in-services.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Performs appointment scheduling.
  • Understands Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurances in relation to billing and verifies insurance information. Makes sure Medicare Secondary Payer form is completed.
  • Responsible for various secretarial, clerical and receptionist activities.
  • Perform clinical support services within protocol and upon completion of proper training and competency evaluation.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School plus 1 to 2 years of formal training or education. 
  • Excellent customer service and computer skills needed. Must be skilled in utilization of office machines.

Preferred Requirements

  • Medical terminology preferred.
  • One year experience in physician reimbursement preferred or experience in medical office environment.

Other Information

  • This is a PRN (as-needed basis) position up at the The Outer Banks Hospital Urgent Care Center in Southern Shores, NC. There are no gauranteed hours for this position and it is not benefit eligible.
  • The pay rate for this position is:
    • Minimum: $11.00
    • Median: $14.30
    • Maximum: $17.60
