Position Summary

  • Performs all essential tasks and responsibilities related to preparing, dispensing, and distributing medications under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Actions reflect and demonstrate a commitment to patient-centered care in which the patient needs and desires are actively solicited.
  • Ensures that policies, procedures, and regulations are followed to support a culture of accountability, consistency, continuous quality improvement, and safety. 
  • Actively learns new skills to enhance the provision of pharmacy services.


  • Receive written prescriptions or refill requests and verify that the information is complete and accurate.
  • Handle telephone calls that do not require the personal attention of a pharmacist, including those to patients, physicians and third party payers.
  • Ensure patient insurance and required documentation for billing is verified prior to claim submission; proactively manage reimbursement concerns.
  • Conduct prospective medication prior authorization services to expedite workflow and enhance the patient experience; helps to support the appeal process to overturn insurance denials and/or benefit exclusions when needed.
  • Accountable for participation in the drug utilization review (DUR) process along with the pharmacist to minimize delays in prescription fulfillment and optimize patient safety.
  • Facilitate effective working relationships and is responsible for proactive communication to patients and providers regarding prescription status.
  • Coordinate prescription triage to outside pharmacy when necessary.
  • Perform the duties of a pharmacy technician as required and other duties as assigned.
  • Ensure all actions contribute to the team effort of providing high quality patient care.
  • Actively seeks out opportunities to improve performance of the department.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School or equivalent is required.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB) required; specialty pharmacy experience highly preferred; proficient with Microsoft Office applications is required.
  • Professional requirements maintained including registration annually with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy and renewal of PTCB certification is required.
  • 1 year to 3 years experience in retail or specialty pharmacy is required.

Preferred Requirements

  • Advanced skills and experience are preferred, including exposure to third party billing and reimbursement.
  • Capable of accepting responsibility, learning advanced computer applications, receiving direction, working independently and having the capacity to complete assigned tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written and the ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • High level attention to detail and processes.

Other Information

  • Hours will be 8:00-6:30 / M-F. 
  • No call, no weekends, or holidays.
