  • Meets with the charge or assigned nurse to get a report (what is patient's condition; what signs, symptoms, and behaviors to be alert for; what to do if patient exhibits these signs, symptoms, and behaviors).
  • When relieved of duties, reports off to the assigned nurse. At the end of the shift, tells the patient they are leaving.
  • The replacement sitter must be present before leaving.
  • Observes the patient and alerts the charge or assigned nurse if the patient exhibits risk of harming himself/herself orothers.
  • Keeps patient in sight at all times.
  • When watching two patients, maintains observation of both and asks for assistance if one patient needs individual attention.
  • Ensures the patient’s rights, including confidentiality and privacy.
  • Works efficiently with others, possessing tact, discretion, and diplomacy.
  • Possesses ability to work under pressure.
  • Able to observe mentally-ill patients.
  • Able to accept leadership and guidance from RNs and LPNs.
  • Must be able to read, write, add, and subtract at a High School level.
  • Rotating 4, 8, or 12-hour shifts as scheduled including weekend rotation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Requires High School Diploma or GED.
  • De-escalation Training, completion of Sitter Competency or Secure
