The Patient Safety Assistant will provide care for patients requiring direct observation due to higher risk for adverse events (falls, self-injury, suicidal ideation or harm to others). He/she will also provide professional, receptionist duties and medical record support which will assist Healthcare Providers in caring for patients and families on assigned nursing units. The Patient Safety Assistant will also provide clinical services as directed by a RN that is in accordance with the NAII licensure/ registration.


  •  High School plus 1 to 2 years of formal training or education. (Approved NA II course and Unit Secretary Course)
  • BLS is required.
  • One year or less experience required.
  • Completion of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) to be completed during orientation.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology required, basic computer skills desirable, clinical training as part of Unit Secretary course is preferred.
  • Must be currently listed with the NC Division of Facility Services at the Care Partner level and current NC NAII listing card required.
  • Experience in a comparable facility can only be substituted for NA I course by successful completion of challenge exam acceptable to the Department of Facility Services.
  • Three to six months in a hospital setting employed as a Unit Sec, Health Unit Coord, or Clinical Sec with closely related responsibilities or an AAS in Medical Office or Medical Office Technology may be substituted for the Health Unit Coordinator course.
