About the Outer Banks Hospital

The Outer Banks Hospital, located in Nags Head, North Carolina, is a full service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The hospital opened in March 2002 and is one of the newest hospitals in eastern North Carolina. The hospital's 21 private rooms are designed to meet the needs of our coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 250,000 in the summer season. The labor and delivery area consists of two labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum rooms, a five-bed nursery, a dedicated caesarean-section operating room and a triage room.


  • Obtains and records demographic and insurance information according to Departmental policies and procedures in the information system.
  • Pre-registers, registers, admits, transfers and discharges patients per departmental policies in a timely manner.
  • Insures that all documents including consents, and Medicare and Tricare messages are signed and scanned correctly in the information system and sent to the appropriate department.
  • Ascertains demographic and financial information necessary for collection. Communicates and responds with appropriate entity concerning billing issues/corrections in a timely manner. Requests and collects co-pay and self-pay payments. Informs customers of their financial responsibilities.
  • Performs computer functions. Generates and disseminates reports and patient information to appropriate departments.
  • Understands Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurances in relation to billing and verifies insurance information. Completes Medicare Questionnaire.
  • Performs DOWNTIME registrations.
  • Operates switchboard. Performs PBX Functions.
  • Keeps area and equipment clean and makes minor adjustments.
  • Attends departmental meetings and in-services. Participates in Performance Improvement activities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have High School Diploma or equivalent, some college preferred.
  • A minimum 1-2 years experience in a health care environment required. Excellent computer skills. Medical terminology preferred.

Preferred Requirements

  • Previous healthcare experience.
  • Experience with various insurances.
  • Ability to work 12 hour night shifts and weekends.

Other Information

  • This is a PRN (as-needed) position. There are no guaranteed hours or benefits.
  • Position requires that Seasonal Patient Access Representatives be available to work three 12-hour shifts per week for the duration of the seasonal period (approx. May 17-Sept 19). Must be willing to work nights (7 pm-7 am) or mid-shifts such as 9 am-9 pm, 10 am-10 pm or noon to midnight.
  • Employment is not guaranteed beyond the seasonal effective dates.
  • The pay range is :
    • Minimum: $11.75
    • Median: $15.25
    • Maximum: $18.75
