About the Outer Banks Hospital

The Outer Banks Hospital, located in Nags Head, North Carolina, is a full service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The hospital opened in March 2002 and is one of the newest hospitals in eastern North Carolina. The hospital's 21 private rooms are designed to meet the needs of our coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 250,000 in the summer season. The labor and delivery area consists of two labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum rooms, a five-bed nursery, a dedicated caesarean-section operating room and a triage room.

Responsibilities

  • Performs initial admission nursing assessment to include psychosocial, sensory perception, function/mobilization, skin integrity, age related changes and nutritional needs. Obtains pertinent history, risk assessment, initiates problem list, discharge plan and patient safety checklist, i.e. high risk for fall.
  • Charting reflects the nursing process and changes in patient status.  Documents identified teaching needs and implements plan including patient and/or significant other. Completes on-going assessments as appropriate and according to hospital policy.
  • Documents evaluation of nursing intervention including patient response. Interprets changes in patient status and intervenes appropriately.
  • Administers medications & IV therapy according to established policies and procedures, taking into consideration the pharmacological effects for the patient population and patient’s response to medications. Responds quickly and appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Coordinates delivery of nursing care in an organized manner in compliance with hospital and patient care services, department policies, protocols, and procedures utilizing a collaborative model. Follows appropriate pain management guidelines.
  • Performs patient care and treatments with consideration to cultural diversity, patient population served, according to established policy and procedures.  Recognizes and administers to psychosocial/spiritual needs of the patient/family and significant others.
  • Assists other units as assigned by Nursing or Hospital Administration.
  • Follows established infection control/stand precautions policies and procedures.
  • Shift reports and communications are timely, pertinent and accurate. Demonstrates an awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for own professional practice. Practices collaboratively with colleagues and other members of the healthcare team. Is aware of standards of practice for profession or specialty and integrates such into daily practice.
  • Participates in elective educational offerings.
  • Performs all POC (Point of Care Testing) procedures accurately. Other duties as assigned.
  • Makes pre-operative calls to all patients and completes pre-op checklist. Verifies patient’s name, date of birth and planned procedure and site. Is consistently ready and prepared for assigned patients and has patients ready for the OR 15 min prior to their scheduled time.
  • Assess and monitors the physical, psychological and social needs of the patient according to age specific needs preoperatively. Includes to assessment of respiratory, circulatory and neurological systems. This assessment is to be documented and coordinated with anesthesia, the surgeon and the circulating nurse.
  • Demonstrates competency in the following skills; Infection control, monitoring intake and output and managing the care of the patient receiving moderate/conscious sedation( patient criteria selection, EKG monitoring, SaO2, LOC, B/p, HR, airway management, medication administration and the use of emergency equipment.
  • Implements all care according to hospital policies and procedure identify and manage patient crisis. Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic agents, surgical procedures and disease processes. Demonstrates proficiency in caring for complex unstable patients.
  • Responsible for completing the preoperative admission insuring that the chart is complete with all required lab studies, X-ray reports, EKG report, H&P, informed consent, etc. Assures that all pre-and post-operative education is complete and age specific, documenting the same. Make post-operative follow-up calls/visits as required. 
  • Maintain QI records/audits for Nurse Director as requested.
  • Available on an “on-call” basis as needed.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state. Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider status is required upon hire. AHA ACLS and AHA PALS certifications required within 6 months of hire.
  • At least one year of Preoperative/PACU experience.
  • Working knowledge of patient care assessment, implementation and evaluation, equipment utilization, maintenance and safety.

Other Information

  • This is a PRN (as needed) position and is not eligible for benefits.
  • May work in PACU or Pain Clinic as needed, but no guaranteed hours.
