Position Summary

The Employee Health Nurse is a professional nurse who is currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina. Works under direct leadership of the Director of Human Resources with supervision by Infection Control and Prevention Nurse. Maintains daily log of employees reporting to Employee Health. Maintains monthly reports for the Safety Committee regarding accidents, injuries, and work-related illnesses. Responsible for immunizing all employees in accordance with CDC, ACIP, and State Guidelines.
Acts as a consultant to the Health System and Medical Staff concerning Employee Health matters. Responsible for implementation of the Employee Health Program.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the Employee Health Program.
  • Performs physicals on all new employees and volunteers.
  • Performs annual Employee Health physicals and PPDs on all employees, volunteers, and junior volunteers in accordance with VBH policies and procedures.
  • OSHA follow-up will be done on all employees with a blood or body fluid exposure.
  • Obtains permits for blood, provides counseling to both the employee exposed and the patient who was the blood/body fluid exposure.
  • Reports any positive exposure findings to the attending physician for the patient, the employee, and the Infection Control and Prevention Nurse.
  • Monitors all illnesses, injuries, and exposures.
  • Sends reports to appropriate committees.
  • Follows-up with all employees and refers for treatment as indicated.
  • Responsible for monitoring and administering Hepatitis B vaccine to employees as required by OSHA.
  • Responsible for monitoring and administering all vaccines required by the Infection Control and Prevention Committee.
  • Monitors all back injuries and requires teaching obligations to injured employees per policy.
  • Serves as safety resource person.
  • Attends workmen's compensation hearings as requested by the Human Resources Department.
  • Complies with OSHA TB standard.
  • Serves as resource person to the Infection Control and Prevention Nurse.
  • Provides confidential HIV testing for employees and serves as resource person for any needed follow-up.
  • Functions as an OSHA Compliance Officer in Employee Health.
  • Develops and maintains a good working rapport with interdepartmental personnel as well as with personnel in other departments throughout the Health System.
  • To assure that the Human Resources Department's services and activities can be properly maintained to meet the needs of employees and the facility.
  • Assures that newly assigned employees and students are adequately trained in the areas of Infection Control and Prevention and Employee Health.
  • Participates in educational opportunities such as workshops, seminars, etc. to keep abreast of current changes in the healthcare field and maintains a professional status.
  • Infection Control and Prevention Committee Serves as a resource.
  • Conducts correspondence and studies as requested by the Infection Control and Prevention Nurse.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of nursing experience.
  • Possess leadership skills, clinical ability, computer knowledge, good organizational skills, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina.
  • Knowledge in Occupational Health.  This may be by virtue of one or more of the following:  education, training, experience, or certification.
  • BLS current.

Preferred Requirements

  • Active member of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses.
