About the Outer Banks Hospital

The Outer Banks Hospital, located in Nags Head, North Carolina, is a full service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The hospital opened in March 2002 and is one of the newest hospitals in eastern North Carolina. The hospital's 21 private rooms are designed to meet the needs of our coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 250,000 in the summer season. The labor and delivery area consists of two labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum rooms, a five-bed nursery, a dedicated caesarean-section operating room and a triage room.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a primary point of entry for providers and patients requiring extensive coordination of cancer care.  Assists in clinical opportunities as appropriate.
  • Works collaboratively with HealthCare Providers in coordinating services for patients.   Appropriately screens telephone calls from the patient and health care providers.  Demonstrates creativity and initiative in solving problems related to the provision of health care services for individuals.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the availability of community resources and financial services for providing clinical care and reducing barriers to care.
  • Serves as a nurse contact for all new cancer patient referrals.  Advocates for patient rights and appropriate utilization of services, including symptom management. Interviews patients regarding their current health practices, identifies health problems, determines the degree of compliance and problems complying with the prescribed treatment plan, documents this information in the patient’s chart and provides effective, ongoing communication to members of the health care team as appropriate. 
  • Demonstrates the ability to review and evaluate the plan of care for effectiveness of desire outcomes.  Collaborates with physicians and members of the health care team, based on patient response to interventions. Works in partnership with community-based organizations and providers to enhance patient support, screenings, networking, and survivorship care, based on evidence-based guidelines.
  • Functions as a contact, educator and liaison for community services for individuals looking for prevention, screening, diagnostic treatment, clinical trial research participation and support services. Utilizes follow up in order to ensure patients’ progress through health care continuum.
  • Maintains appropriate data on each encounter and prepares and delivers monthly progress reports detailing programmatic activities. Identifies barriers to care and utilizes community resources to develop plans that address the underserved population in the community.  Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or temporary North Carolina licensure or meet requirements to hold RN licensure in a compact state.

  • Five or more years of nursing experience required. Must possess good communication skills, both verbal and written, and be able to interact with members of the medical and clinical team.  The applicant must be willing to both learn and seek solutions to problems in areas of uncertainty.

Preferred Requirements

  • OCN preferred.
  • Experience working with cancer patients preferred.

  • This is a full-time, forty hours a week, benefit eligible position.

  • Minimum: $22.60
  • Median: $29.38
  • Maximum: $36.16
