Position Summary

The Nurse Extern Program gives student nurses first-hand experience in and exposure to the knowledge, skills and relationships needed to develop as a professional nurse.  The Nurse Extern provides direct care to designated patients and their families under the supervision of the RN preceptor, using nursing assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation.  The Nurse Extern will perform tasks within scope of Nurse Assistant registration while carrying out patient and family teaching and participates in discharge planning.

The program is seven weeks in length.  The program begins with one week of hospital based oreintation followed by unit based orientation and preceptorship with a seasoned RN preceptor.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must be enrolled in a BSN program and must be entering their senior year of nursing school in the Fall of 2020.  Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and must achieve Nurse Aide II certification prior to the start date of the Extern Program.

Other Information

Applications are due no later than January 15, 2020.  All applicant must complete the online application, submit an unofficial transcript and an essay describing why they would like to participate in the program and what they hope to contribute to patient care during the program.  Candidates are required to  secure three recommendations (professional, personal and clinical faculty recommended), which must be submitted by January 15, 2020, particiate in a brief interview as part of the selection process, and commit to attend all sessions of the program.
